Hi all,

I have just had to dose Amquel+ in my QT to detoxify a slight ammonia spike, I was due to be starting a 10day kanaplex treatment today but as per the excellent advice gathered from this forum I have postponed due to the Amquel.

Can anyone tell me how long this stuff lasts in the water and if it disspates on its own? Or should I just plan to do a 100% wc before medicating?

Thanks in advance

Nick

Amquel does not react with kanaplex like it would with copper, so it's a little less dangerous. It does dissipate with time, but a large water change will help. It will also help with your ammonia levels.

Since you are doing the antibiotic treatment, you can do a 25% waterchange every 48 hours before re-dosing the medication. That will help clear out residual medication and manage ammonia without a reducing agent.

Usually Amquel and similar products will detoxify ammonia for 24-48 hours and after that dissipate. It should be safe to dose it with antibiotics but ensure enough oxygen is available in water.

Thanks very much, test kits are still registering ammonia at the moment (albeit deotxified) so I might have to postpone the antibiotics until I know the filter has caught up anyway. I will be glad once this quarantine period is over!

You're in good hands here. I usually just address ammonia in quarantine with large water changes and medication re-dosing. Dr Tims or a live bacteria source can help aid your nitrogen cycle.

Thanks, I have read the attached and to be honest you wouldn't believe the amount of seeded foam i have split between 3 filters in the QT, plus I added colony at the start but one or two days complaceny when clearing up uneaten food and boom, ammonia!
I find keeping the pH up in a bare tank to be a pain too, particularly when dosing amquel which instantly causes a 0.1 drop, even with adequate aeration so will be very glad to release everything back to the DT. I have halved the bioload by removing my clowns and done a large wc so hopefully everything will balance out again.
