I am upgrading my 75 gallon reef to my dream 180 gallon reef starting now... Here is my dilemma... What to do when power fails? I have 2 generators for my house but both need to be started manually when the power goes out. I currently have two battery powered air pumps to work as life support until my generators can manually be started. With a 180 gallon tank I fear that the battery powered back ups will not be enough to help as life support? I travel with work and go on many vacations.

What is a powerful enough solution to keep the 180 tank alive for 24 / 48 hours in a power outage? The high end option of an auto start generac generator I don't think is the solution b/c what if the power is running and instead the tank stops do a power short? I have had this happen due to water spillage / etc.

Designing my tank now and want to build in the needed redundancy for power outage.

I’ve got a general for mine.

You could just use battery backups for the pumps in the display if you’re worried about 24/48hr power outages you’ve also got to think about temperatures in the tank.

If you’re not home to start your generators the only good option is have someone go to your house and start the generator up for you if you don’t want to go with a automated generator.

I don’t know why you’d have a short with the tank if the power went out. Spillage should be addressed before any problem would be solved. You shouldn’t have that as it could cause many more issues... a fire comes to mind. Why would you have water spill out of the tank?
