Ok guys: I have analysis paralysis. I need someone to say ‘yea’ or ‘nay’ to help me along.

I QT everything that goes within 10 feet of my tank. Other than the known exceptions.

My tank was started with dry rock and sand. This- it lacks diversity. And most importantly: pods. Not a single pod in my tank.

I’m about to set up a phyto farm and culture pods for introduction to my tank. I can’t find a definitive answer to this- do I QT?

Part of me says no. These come from culture conditions, right, fishless systems. So no need.

But my paranoid overprotective parasitologist side says : why risk it?

So y’all get to decide.

Bottled pods- QT? Yea or nay?

If the bottled pods are from a reputable dealer; no - I would not worry about putting them through QT. The systems that they come from are free from fish, so I would consider them safe for direct addition.

If the pods you are using come from someone's tank or the like, then yes - I would suggest a 76 day period where you QT the pods in their own environment. This has the added advantage of also increasing the pod population, so not a totally horrible option (aside from the hassle, of course).

These would be bottled from someone like eg AlgaBarn. I *know* they are from fishless systems, but years of QTing anything wet has me getting palpitations whenever I think about it, lol

No way I’m putting anything from anyone else’s tank into mine with 76 days QT. Not worth the risk.

So- nay, then? I can blame you if something gets through?

I just want someone to blame, is all!

Uugghh. “Is all”.

I’m getting more southern every day. Family, amiright?

Hehe - I totally get where you are coming from. :-)

I consider them safe. I think @AlgaeBarn would tell you the same.

But in the end, this is your tank. If you feel the need to do a 76-day fallow period on pods, then you should do that. As I said; there are benefits in terms of the resulting population being added to the tank (assuming you feed the pods well, etc., of course).
If you decide it's not required based on the advice of anyone else, then it's still your decision. Sorry; I take the bullets on my own tanks enough as it is; not willing to line up for your - no matter how small I think the risk is. :-)

Nah, too late. No ‘takesy backsies” like they said when I was a kid. You said it’d be fine, it’s on you man.

Thing is- I think my reluctance is that I want someone to say QT, to justify setting up a phyto-farm and setting up a pod tank.

Out of curiosity; did you QT any bottles of bacteria you added (assuming you did here, of course)? The pod bottles are much the same.

Lol, no, but as a microbiologist, I know they aren’t prepared in remotely the same way, so not a fair comparison.

Hey Neil,

If the pods are from us, they are free from any fish pest or parasite. I have not seen other peoples operation and I don't know much they care to spend the extra $$ to keep everything isolated, buy separate equipment, have different people havesting different species, etc. We go through EXTREME lengths to make sure we can supply our customers with clean products. We don't use fish water, inverts, or anything like that for our cultures. We use fresh saltwater and a ridiculous amount of live phytoplankton. We have removed every opportunity for the pods to come into path with pests and parasites.

I promise you will not catch anything but a ton of pods.

Awesome. Thanks for the info !

Oh no! where they in the DT or QT?

QT. I QT everything. Had them 7 days, my qt is 5-6 weeks. Copper first 14 days, they refused food+GC, so I was giving them 3 days to adjust to eating, and the day I started medicated food, 3 passed super quick. Bummed.
