All, I live in an area where the power never goes our te more than 30 minutes. Been here Emory Texas since 2002. I write this in hope that those reefers who do not gave a backup plan for power outages can appreciate the experience my wife and went through last night. I was on the fence a few months ago about getting a power generator. Look at options and cost. In the I decided to get a gas generator 4,750 watts. Well last night power went about 10pm. Waited a bit and then put oil and gas in the generator. Started!!! Hooked up tank and freezer to it. A car ran an intersection and took out a pole. Lines were on the ground. Bad wreck for sure. As sunrise approached, power came on. And I fed the fish / corals as the day before. Everyone happy. Worth the $350 dollars. Bottomline, have a back up plan yor power outages. Saved the tank and all the food in refrigerator....

Great reminder! Thank you for sharing your experience - I'm glad that it worked out for you!

Thanks for the reminder. I've been considering a generator for a long, long time. Really need to pull the trigger before I actually need it. The thing is, I've got 5 tanks, so I really need something powerful that can accesse multiple circuits in the breaker box. $$!

We’ve had a whole house automatic one for years because power goes out here all the time. It’s great. Now that I have a tank, even better to have it. Not cheap though - about $5-6K.

Ouch!

A decent auto whole house generator will cost an easy 5k + install .
You can get a decent standby generator for 500-1k and run extension cords to equipment or have an interlock kit installed to plug into the house panel.

Wow. 5 tanks. One thing you can do is shut everything off except main pump and skimmer. You do not need lights, heaters. Calculate minimum watts needed for each tank.
