I’ve had my tank for about 6 months now & everything is going well. I was considering adding anemone. What steps should I take first & where should I start?? Thanks in advance.

Start by observing your current parameters. How have you been doing with nitrates, phos, alk, cal, and magnesium? And most importantly, the stability of those parameters? How are your current corals doing?

Next, keep in mind that some nems get BIG and split often when healthy. Are you prepared for that? Are you ready for anenomes to go walking around your whole tank?

Some of the most common anemones are sebaes, condys, bubble tips, and rock flower nems.

Make sure your tank is stable for starters. Do you have coral? Anemones need at least as much light as coral (more for some species). Do you want a hosting species or not?

Rock flower anemones can be really colorful and are super easy, but they don’t host clownfish. Bubble tip anemones are a good option for a first anemone. They do tend to split a lot and 1 can become dozens in a few years. I’d stay away from carpets and magnifica’s until your tank is more mature.

You sound ready, the BTA group is more forgiving IMM.
If you have corals and you add, you risk it damage, but once stuck, if you don’t change the flow or light, he’ll stay.
Like everything in this hobby, they hate rapid changes and do poorly in unstable chemistry. All normal reef parameters apply.
Watch for light or white specimens, they really don’t ship well and many are “bleached” when they get here. Leave these types at the store.
Good luck and have fun.

BTAs are a good place to start. Make sure your tank’s basic chemistry is stable. Join your local reef keeping club and you’re sure to find someone with a split they’re willing to give away or sell for a few bucks. Good luck!
