Hey all,

I just began dosing bionic to raise my alk and keep my calcium stable. I am using b-ionic alk and calcium. My perameters were alk 7.3 and cal 450. I dosed 10mL of alk to raise it to 7.5 and I dosed 70mL to raise the calc to 460. My black widow BTA didn't enjoy this apparently and closed up 2 hours after which is also an hour before tank lights go out. The anemone split about a month ago and they both happened to close up at the same exact time. My perameters after I manually dosed are 7.5 (right were I wanted it) and calc shot up to 480-490 (higher than I calculated off of marine depots online calculator). Should I be extremely concerned? I noticed on of my hammers closed but everything else looks fine even a larger frogspawn, another hammer, and a torch. Mainly concerned for my anemone at this point. Is this a normal reaction

Anemones are very sensitive to pH change. That is why dosing CaCl is fine but dosing Kalk or Bicarb quickly cause problem for the anemones. Most of the time you see reaction with corals also, but more drastic with anemone.
Drip the alkalinity booster (very high in pH) slowly to the overflow. Doing this often increase calcium carbonate to your return pump. You can also drip them to high flow area in the main tank, at the output of the return pump, which is what I do.

I had a unique experience over the weekend with making a large (50 ppm) calcium adjustment. I needed to bring my Ca back into range after leaving my doser offline for a few days to allow Alk to adjust itself down through consumption.... my anemones got ticked off and one decided to split.

I had a total of 6 nems which originally started as 2. Now I have 7. I didn't need/want another one, but they're nearly impossible to catch in my tank due to the amount of places for them to move and settle into.

The interesting part is I've made adjustments in the past just fine when I was switching from BRS to AF123. Something about a large Ca adjustment didn't sit well and most of them are all still closed and it's been 24 hrs. This is purely anecdotal and I'm not suggesting everyone go nuts and start doing large Ca to get theirs to split. Reefers have observed nems tend to split when there's some large change in the tank.. this may be another example of such change.

Update: RedSea Ca Pro check is off the scale where i went into my second syringe. That means I'm well above prob 700 ppm Ca. The mistake was mine when I used the BRS calculator. I think I might have used the incorrect source Ca selected. I selected the discontinued 'jug' vs pouch which is largely because I have very old left over Ca. Nothing else seems too upset except from the nems. There are a couple that a partially opened, but may be because it's clown is constantly trying to get inside. The rest remain closed... moral of the story... even some experience reefers make mistakes. I targeted the max recommended 50ppm dosing and ended up dosing significantly more. Crossing fingers to see how the tank behaves over the next couple days. I took my Ca doser offline for now to allow Ca to go down again.
