Looking for some assistance on my anemone. First can anyone identify or confirm species? Originally i had thought it was a macro dyoneesis LTA, but now i believe its either a H. Crispa or an H. Magnifica.

Also, i know they will move around to find their optimal location with lighting, flow, temp and such. But with its current position i believe its attempting to get up on the rocks. Depending on the species, this move wouldn’t make sense. If its an H. Crispa it would foot in the bed at the bottom of the tank. Unless he’s trying to get up and over the rocks to the front of my tank where there is room in the substrate to foot himself. This will be the 5th time in 2 weeks that he’s moving around. And I haven’t seen any other picture or article where the anemone extends that far up. Bottom to top he’s gotta be around 8”-9” off the ground.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Long tentacle anemones like to have there foot in the sand I have not heard of one the will go on rock. I think the anemone will keep moving around until it finds some sand where it can bury its foot. You can help it buy gently placing it on the sand. And it is normal for them to move around so much some are even known to move around a whole year!

By the way that is a beautiful anemone! I love the colors!
Thanks, i think he’s awesome too, when i saw him at the lfs he wasn’t that big lol. But i got him into the tank and it bloomed. Now he’s just moving around. Been a rough couple weeks with ups and downs but I’m optimistic it’ll make it. Been doing a LOT of reading on how to figure out which species LTA it is. I’m leaning toward H. Crispa, but was looking for more opinions.

And they are one of harder species to keep. If this is your first anemone I would of recommended you to something like a bubbletip anemone they are the easiest to keep. But long tentacle anemone are the prettiest!

An LTA is not a crisps. H. Crispa and H. malu will typically fall under the common name, sebae anemone. An LTA is its own species, Macrodactyla doreensi (sp?) , and like everyone is saying, it needs to have its good buried in sand, 3 inches at least

One good trick for an LTA where not a ton of sand is required.

Items needed.

Short piece of pvc about the same diameter as the nems foot. Preferably a little bigger.

45 or 90 degree elbow. Depends on where you are going to place the pipe.

Pipe end cap.

All items above should be the same size. You are basically building a tunnel for the foot.

Aim for about 4-5 inches total length.

Assemble the tube with the cap on one end and the 45 on the other end. You do not have to glue the pieces. Just fit them together.

Put a little bit of sand in the tube and then place the nems foot in the tube. Placement of the tube will vary, but ltas seem to prefer moderate light and moderate random flow. They also like to lean against a rock for all the ones I have had.

I typically set a rock on top of the tube and bury the tube as much as I can in the sand.

This provides a safe place for the nems foot which they seem to like. If a nem can feel safe and secure, in regards to their foot, they will typically stay and not move.

This also works for rfas with just a pipe cap for their foot.

I would do this but with the way this Nem moves, i doubt highly it’ll stay put. So far it has footed 5x in different areas. Doesn’t matter where i put him lol. But I read up and everything i read said this was normal. So I’ve left him alone for about 5 days. If you look at the pics i originally posted that’s where its been for the longest. What Ive noticed the past 24 - 36 hrs is that when the lights come on it’ll come all the up. But at night fall back down and get smaller. But when he’s up top he’s big as hell lol.... looking as happy and healthy as any Nem I’ve seen so far. It’s just setting up its foot. Colors are great, its an awesome purple under the white light, and even more beautiful under the blue and rgb lighting.

About the substrate depth, i cleaned up more crushed coral and deepened the whole bed. Just for this 1 creature lol....my next step is to get a bag of fine aragonite, and mix that in with the existing crushed. Ill spread that mix over an area approx 48”sq and place him there to see if that works for him. I’m thinking he’s not attaching due to the type of substrate.

I like the pipe idea and i will try it inside the new sub mix i do. If the mix doesn’t work, ill put straight fine sub in the tube and see if that works. I just cant change out my while sub bed due to cycling process which I’m sure you understand.

I took a video which i wish i could send u to show how this guy is “floating” when he’s big up top.... still pics don’t do this guy justice
