Anemone ID and Care Advice Please

Greetings All,

Hopefully this thread is in the right section of the boards. So have been shopping online and have come across an Anemone that doesnt look like anything that i am familiar with and was wondering if you could help me identify it so that i can decide whether to try it or not.

Have asked the seller if they no this by any other names, but apparently not

It's a rock flower anemone. These are great, love clinging to rocks and are very easy to maintain (light and occasional supplemental feeding). While they can move, once they find a spot they like they tend to remain there unless given a reason to move. Reef safe. I like the colors on this one.

That's what i thought initially, however speaking to the owner he has mentioned that it has a really potent sting and has entered into chemical warfare with corals as well as left lasting stings to a clownfish.... just doesnt sound like a RFA to me. Plus looks like none i have ever seen in person

I'll concede that it does look a bit different from your standard variety. I have all types in my tank, and it's not a tube, carpet or condi anemone.

He's selling it as a rock flower, though. Maybe inquire where he got it and what region of the world it came from (the typical ones originated in the Caribbean).

They got it as a Hitch Hiker on some Indonesian Live Rock between 7 and 9 years ago and has since exploded in the tank, again making me think its not RFA as they're mostly carribbean/gulf unless i have missed something?

Interesting. Apparently there's a new related species they discovered in Bali. I think your specimen fits it to a tee.

So I think it's safe to say that the Indo variant is slightly different and potentially has a heavier sting than its Caribbean counterpart.

I don't think these are true rock flower anemones, they look like like they are more closely related to Borneman Anemones, or the frilly anemones in Singapore. It's a really cool looking variation, and I would absolutely buy it if it was in the US. But they can reproduce pretty frequently when healthy. I have to keep Borneman Anemones in my sump because the stores here don't want them.

Thats the name I was thinking of Borneman's Anemone, thank you. Was thinking what i could do with my "spare" tank

Why don't more people keep these?! This is my new one from Fishnreef...absolute beautiful animal. I love the speckled column. Hopefully she likes the spot I picked out for her!!! (all nems are female in my world lol...too pretty to be boys!) ;):D

Well 911 wont help in the UK, but i appreciate the sentiment.
I will pass on this then, my BTA smacks me hard enough (and i must have an allergy) so dont want anything more potent!

Hell's fire anemones have more "3D" tentacles, more like cotton balls or branches on a bush. This anemone has very flat tentacles, so I am tempted to think it isn't one of that family.

Except the behavior doesn't match up. Powerful sting (read: potentially fatal), can kill even clownfish and wages war on corals.

I’m pretty sure borneman anemones fit that bill. Hellfire anemones look really different. They don’t have flat tentacles like yours. Lots of anecdotes on R2R of borneman killing coral and fish.
