Yesterday my RBTA started looking deflated and after doing some research I have begun to think that it may be a bacterial infection. I promptly ordered cipro but it wont be here till friday at the soonest. Today he looks even worse. I dont have a QT tank set up at the moment as the tank I have used in the past broke. Is this guy jus going to die before then or is there something else I can do in the mean time? my parameters are
Ammonia - 0ppm
Nitrite - 0 ppm
Nitrate - 16.5 ppm
Phosphate - 0.01ppm
Alk - 7.9 dkh
Salinity - 1.026 d SG
PH - 8.0
Temp 78.1

Nems can be weird creatures, Cipro is the best treatment for them for a bacterial infection. But I believe you have time. Worst thing you can do to a nem is do something to fast. Be very careful if you pull it out to treat to not damage the foot as this is almost always fatal. 8 months is still fairly young to house a bta but it can be done, the params you have stated seem to be just fine. Have you changed your lighting or flow any?

There's no way to tell if it will expire before Friday for sure but I can say that some nems can exist in this state for a long time.

Use this time to gently remove the nems foot from the rock and get it into a holding container floating or in the sump. In this state, you can usually get them to release relatively easily.

What is the treatment plan? With $50 and an hour, you could have a HT set up and ready from Petco. If you won't have meds until Friday, that's plenty of time to get a treatment tank set up.

Woah!

What kind of lighting are you running. Your parameters seem good enough. I think its a light/flow issue.

+1 ^ a 10 gallon kit from petco with heater and filter will run you around 50-60 and is a perfect setup for a HT.

I too believe it to be one of those two, my BTA really didnt like when I upgraded my lights.

The nem would Be more likely to have been restlessly walking around the tank/ hiding in a crevice if it was a lighting or flow issue, rather than completely buttoned down.

So... we have a Petco setup for $60.00, Cipro is about $25.

$85 bucks.

How much was the Nem?

True. But after moving around in search of acceptable light and flow and not finding it...

Light is a hipargero aqua knight havent changed the settings except when I accidentally bump it to a different setting when turning off but i put it back to what it was immediately. The flow has been the same since day 1 of the tank being set up. For the flow i have just the aquaclear 70. I plan on going later today and getting a 10 gallon tank for a HT. Do i need to get another light for the HT? The nem was 45 plus shipping

You may be onto something lol, Guess it depends on the desire of the cost of having a HT, but I mean that can be reused. Im gonna say the average cost of a bta is probably 50-60?

So you dont have a powerhead for flow? That could also very well be the cause, no flow. How large is the tank? Most of the food our nems get is from flow bringing nutrients and food to them, even if we direct feed.

Correct no powerhead. I have been on the fence about getting one because i figured the filter was enough after watching the erratic movement of the food during feedings

How large is your tank? I have a 60 breeder which is only a 4 foot tank and I have two powerheads on it.

Also a 10 gallon tank is pushing it for a BTA, they can get much larger than people believe and nems require very good water parameters consistently. It is very easy for water to get out of whack in a 10 gallon tank, that only has 8 gallons of water because of rock. Those parameter swings will definitely cause a nem to close up.
