Hello all
Need some help with my BTA it was doing great I have had it about 4 months I decided to get an LTA which had some issues settling so I got some pvc and it’s now been resting in there the LTA isn’t to happy but it is stable in the pvc my BTA has not been happy at all since I got the LTA it’s looking flat with not great looking tentacles it’s mouth is closed I have been trying to spot feed mysis shrimp it doesn’t seem to eat not sure what else to do? It’s been 3 days like this all water parameters are good I assumed it’s upset about the LTA.
anyone else go through this ?

This is for starters sign of bleaching often caused by adding to an immature tank as anemones do not do well in new tanks and cannot tolerate water changes and changes in chemistry that often occurs the first 90 days of tank running. Others would be high salinity, high temperatures and heavy lighting which causes the density of zooxanthellae in the coral or anemones' tissue to decline, resulting in loss of coloration and therby showing bleach effect. Its the inner algae that produces growth and color
Others would be High nitrate and lack of food (feed mysis shrimp 2-3X per week)

Anemones are better suited to well established tanks. Your struggles are likely due to lighting, tank maturity, and overall nutrition. There is no instant fix unfortunately.

Thank you the tank is about a year old and the nitrates are very low this reaction didn’t start until I added a new anemone the BTA was doing great eating fresh pieces of shrimp so I thought it was because the LTA I got was being a nuisance by tumbling around.

welcome to the club!!!!!

just adding something in here, but, 2 things. LTAs typically like a slightly deeper sand bed to bury their foot, and, it’s hit or miss when bringing a new anemone into a tank. Some would get along, and some will try to slowly kill each other over time. It’s one of the reasons some of the seasoned guys won’t mix species. Your chances go way up if to stick to a species, and even some have kept multiple species in a tank long term, but unfortunately there isn’t a universal rhyme or reason for why they are successful yet.

even in my case, I had a tank of 9 rose and rainbow BTAs, and introduced a pretty green BTA with pink tips. First week was fine, second week the original BTAs shrunk to half their size, week after that they shrunk to a 1/4 of their size and retracted their tentacles, while the green BTA was flourishing. Removed the green BTA at the end of the third week and the original BTAs went back to normal after a few weeks. Anemone warfare comes in two forms, stinging each other with tentacles and the other is excretion of toxins to each other.

Thank you so much for the info I think I will return the LTA tomorrow although I did research that they should do fine together I don’t want to put anymore stress on my BTA I feel bad that this happened and can only hope my BTA recovers. Thank you again.

You’re doing the right thing till you’re ready. If you have a second tank to transfer some of the media into and have a second tank for the LTA, then, I say go for it, but, what I would do down the road is run carbon on your tank before introducing another different species.

please keep in mind, I’m no expert, but, this is just what I’ve seen in the past.

regardless, welcome to the forum, you’re doing great and the right thing with asking and doing!!!!!

Thank you I appreciate your feedback. Hopefully I will have good news to let you all know how my BTA does after I take out the LTA.

Welcome! Glad you joined. Fingers crossed for your anemone - already really great info shared above.

Have you considered starting your build thread? I found its a great place to document my tank's evolution for myself. I started tank first then joined, so I'm still finding myself going back collecting pictures & updating historically as well as current state. Once you create your first post in your thread and link it to your account, they will give you build badge (look left, under my ID)
