I’ve heard of anemone’s spawning…. Usually the “my tank is cloudy” discussion.

Well, while I was in the kitchen prepping my wife a piece of apple pie I hear her yell, “I… I think, somethings happening.” Sure a very scientific response from a marine biology degree holder.

What she saw, and I only got a quick clip/catch of myself was a egg ball released… and dispersed amongst the tank quickly followed by the puff of cloudy liquid.

Could someone, more knowledgeable than myself, confirm BTA’s release eggs?

This is my wife’s xenia tank. She loves the coral and I can’t stand it in my main display.

we have a 40 Nuvo with just anemone’s, xenia, two clowns, a bangaii, and an enormous brittle sea star.

Gets a 10% water change ever 2 weeks along with a Xenia prune. Fish fed daily, anemone/star get target fed a selcon soaked krill once every 3-4 weeks.

A day after a water change, and roughly 18 hours after being fed this thing happened.

Spawning event?

It does look like it released eggs

I agree, but I’ve only ever know anemones to split for reproduction.
I’ve had my anemones spawn before , it looks like kalk paste being released under water lol they release larvae and sperm to fertilize, most of it gets caught in filtration but maybe a couple nems will survive , just gotta wait and see!

Ha, while this would be cool…. My fish and inverts chowed down on the eggs. Free meal but I would highly doubt anything makes it.

This morning I woke up to a cloudy tank, could have been the males releasing sperm and tonight I witnessed the females release egg sacks. too bad the clowns ate all the eggs lol but so very interesting

How did it went after ? Mine is, at the moment I'm speaking, spawning so many eggs that I dont know what to do or have to do after.

It looks like BTA eggs to me. I've had one spawn before. But I only have clones of the same anemone, i.e. females, so obviously the eggs weren't fertile and didn't hatch.

Anybody got any baby anemones out of these events? I know the Waikiki Aquarium had tank raised sexually reproduced BTA many years ago.

Just curious if the timing may be related to the full moon? I'm asking because my rfa just spawned too.

Unless the tank gets exposure to moonlight, I am not sure moonlight have anything to do with it.
Full moon happens when the Earth is in the middle of of the Sun and the Mooon. This can cause a small variation of gravitational force.
It is possible but highly unlikely that the animals can sense this extremely small variation in gravitational force in these cases. The most logical and likely explanation is change in light intensity as the signal regarding the living cycles that is periodically depends on the moon cycles. This obviously impossible with our indoor reef tanks.

After my mass spawning event of my green gig last yr..I now see hundreds of small "swimming" anemones in my tank that were never there before..NOT gigs..just nuisance anemones...I hope I can find a fish that eats them that wont bother the gigs..thinking klein or copperband bfly.
