Hi, so I have a question. I have a LTA and about two weeks ago my daughter and her friend messed with my reef tank and some how dropped one of my hammer corals and I found my LTA on top of the hammer. So the hammer is totally messed up and some of the tentacles(a few pieces) came off but the LTA is doing great and thriving. My question is the pieces are just around the bottom of the tank and they have vibrant color..I was wondering will the tentaclesame eventually die or can those pieces produce a new anemone??

Well they definitely won't turn into new anemone's. You have to have apart of the mouth for that to happen. I've heard of some people feeding vibrant NEM tentacles to sick/struggling NEMs to replace the zooxanthellae, but thats really it.

OK thanks..I don't have another question do LTAS split?

LTA's will either split, bud, or do an asexual reproduction.
The tentacles will more then likely just die off over time, and should not cause any issues with the water.

What do you mean bud? Like a Duncan when it buds new heads? And what's an asexual reproduction? Sorry...thanks

What do you mean bud? And what is asexual reproduction

I get that..but another just appears are it'll split

Nems will go asexual when happy. If they get stressed or feel they have over grown there spot (again stressed) they will split. This gives them a better chance that at least 1 of them will survive.

What do you mean bud? And what is asexual reproduction
1)Budding is when the nem will lose a section of it's foot and you will see a baby nem start to form. (it will grow to it's maturity and will always be smaller then the one it budded from)
2)Splitting is done at the mouth and you get two nems looking exactly the same way (size will be the same)
3) asexual is when the nem spits out sperm to fertilize it's own eggs. It will take time but you will have a baby or two running around after a long wait
