My BTA has been balling up a bit lately. Last night I thought I was going to pull him out before it died.
I was up every couple hours watching him. Today he's out like there's nothing to worry about.

Then I realized I had dropped my lighting intensity. Problem with having spectrum adjustable lights :(. (must leave it a lone)
Anyway I cranked up the UV and violet and he seems happier.
Let's see how he goes tonight.

Would you think this BTA had issues?

Parameters are all good except Nitrates at 30. I have added Seachem Matrix today to drop it.

Looks to be ok in the picture, a pic under white light would help give a better idea as we can see it’s colouration.

I think you have correctly identified the most likely cause. Lighting flow and alk seem to be the 3 big things that bta’s dislike changing

is it balling up at lights out or close too and reopening fully the next morning when the lights come on? Or through the day also.

If just at lights out I would not worry too much, mine shrink down a bit or ball up a bit close to lights out but are always back to normal when lights come on.

You seem to be on the right track keep things as consistent and sable as possible and you should be fine.

Don't start dosing something. My nitrate has been 30 and nems had no issue. Too many miracle products out there that can cause just as much harm as good. Focus on getting all parameters in order. If nitrates are high then others are often out of whack or unstable. Also if that's a BTA then it may not like being on the sand like that. Mine are as high as they can get with my kessils at 85% intensity.

Also deflating is normal. Deteriorating or gaping mouth is not.

It looks bleached but otherwise looks good. Keep things consistent and stable I would think its fine.
He did let got a few lots of zooxanthellae. Which I now guess was due to lower lights and not getting enough light to maintain them?
Can they recover Zooxanthellae?

I placed him on top of this rock. Where he is is where he settled weeks ago?
I was expecting him to move higher

True. Nitrates have been at 30 for a while. I'd prefer it at 15 or less but he was fine with it high. Pretty sure it's just me and the lights.
Should have stuck with the strip LED that can in the setup

Any new additions need to be acclimated. Depending on the strip lights who knows if they're enough or not. If lighting is too much they will hide or deflate. If they're extending and reaching for the lights then they're good or not enough. One of my rainbows goes between 3 or 4 inches to 14+ inches daily.

That’s how I felt after I got my first BTA. I was stressed out, I wanted to love it but was constantly worried when it was added to the tank.
