I know having clownfish in a tank doesn't require keeping an anemone. But I've read how they'll attempt to host corals like branching frogspawn, hammers, and others which irritate the corals. To play it safe, I'm wondering if there's are and good recommendations that ideal for a new reef keeper. I want to keep any coral I add happy and healthy. Thanks in advance for the advice.

So if I had to do it again I would have kept my clownfish in a tank (probably a qt tank) for a few weeks with just a nem wait for them to host it for a few weeks then take a acclimation box and move them together inside the tank

Now it’s very important to get your nems in before your corals as the nems will move around when first getting in and will kill your corals

They’re dumb. They’ll host a plastic plant as a pair of mine are doing in a fish only tank right now

That's because the Ocellaris clownfish and BTA are not a natural host relationship in the wild.

If you want to play it safer, you can either switch to a natural host for the Ocellaris or if you really want a BTA you can switch to a clownfish species that have a more natural bond with a BTA like A. Bicinctus (Spotcinctus, Red Sea), Clarkii, etc.

Or if you can find a clown hosting BTA at LFS that's obviously always a good sign and even safer if you buy the BTA too.

Yeah. A worker at a LFS I checked out recently said this. Let it be in the tank and move around until it finds its happy spot and stays put. I'll do this if I decide to get one.

BTA?

I wouldn't just assume that because you have a clown and an anemone that they will go together. I have 5 BTAs in my tank and my clowns avoid them all. I also have a patch of Xenias, no go for them. Hammers nope, Goni nope, toadstools sinularia zoas. none of it. Power heads and heaters they don't like either. They are clearly broken.

If your keeping corals and want them to stay happy, forget the nem.
See first what they host, upper corners and heaters are famous, adding the nem for potential saving of coral seems quite risky.

No, surprisingly they are normal most people just don't know that BTA and Ocellaris are not a Host relationship in the wild which is why it is more difficult to get one to bond to it.

Im going to push back a little bit. I think it depends... I have 4 clownfish 2 different type of anemones species with SPS what the heck no issues what so ever.
