If I had one in an acclimation type box at the top of my tank, will it be ok just keeping it there? I have no idea where I want to release or if I want to release it into the display

You're better off lowering your flow, putting him in something like a shallow mason jar or something similar, burying that in the sand next to a rock, put the nem in the jar and let him do his thing for a couple hours.

My wife keeps these jars around and they're super helpful for placing anemones.

The thing about putting him at the top of the tank is that it could be too much light and then they'll start to expel zooxanthellae at a rapid rate, lowering chances of survival.

It can if it wants to. They'll just move out like how they move along the rock work. Generally speaking you want the 'nem to find its own spot - which they're pretty good at doing!
