hiya, i have a very juvenile emparor angel in my main tank, he got given him with HLLE after a friend couldnt keep him in his main as his other angels were attacking. we feed spirilina laced food and vitamins every day but it seems to be getting worse and has now moved along the lateral line. is there anything else i can do? if not how long does he have?

Thanks
-Fred

unfortunately i dont think theres a cure but releaving any stress can help. do you run a gounding probe, some link HLLE to stray voltage and as it causes a lot of stress. Make sure you're feeding good food, soak it in Selcon and you can do broccoli (id blanch it quick as its just easier to eat). also pictures would be a big help!

Anecdotal but there is some who state a connection with the use of activated carbon. If using carbon perhaps stop, or switch it to a cleaner type like rox .08 and make sure its rinsed.

Food wise perhaps picking up a angel specific diet or additive. These will either contain sponge or the base nutrients in sponges. Which is a large part of the diet for many large angels. I like angel elixir and San Francisco brand angel and butterfly diet.

Other items to look at would be foods high in antioxidants like krill. That are high in cystine, beta carotenes etc.

My yellow tang has HLLE. I am 99% sure it was caused by voltage. I added a grounding probe and he started to improve. The damage is still noticeable but hasn't gotten worse and is getting better. I highly recommend adding a probe to your tank.

Here's a very good link discussing HLLE and treatments:

There has been some evidence suggesting that the same culprit of Hole in the Head disease might be behind HLLE. It can be treated with Metro. Could feed to your fish in the DT as long as you are careful and removed any uneaten of the following (a turkey baster works great here) Metro + Food + Focus.

Some have also found and it is mentioned in the article above that Beta Glucan + garlic can be very helpful treating HLLE.

Selcon soaked foods and ecosystems fish solution is an awesome product that helps heal HLLE.

Do you have a lot of experience with Fish Solution. I am interested in using it or something similar like Marine Trace (seachem) or the Brightwell equivalent. Would you mind telling me your experiences with Fish Solution?

Well I personally love this stuff when I was treating HLLE and currently add it to the frozen fish food as a supplement but haven't used it for dosing the tank as supplemental trace elements. I dose the AF balling method for this so I cant really speak to that.
