i posted this also in copper thread so please excuse double post.. but thought maybe better to do as a new post..

ok.. so help me out here.. I was doing a hypo/ copper QT.. all was good until yesterday or so. two issues. first here is the QT Set up. 55 gallon tank at 1.010 and cupermine at .25 for 21 days. Over past 24 hours. small goldflake is not eating and today.. started the heavy breathing and swimming straight up verticle. wondering if organ failure.. Yesterday I did a 50 percent water change keeping the Salinity at same level. also in the tank are three small purple tangs, pair of multi bars and personifer ... all doing ok and eating and picking at sides of tank for food. no signs of outward ick. no signs of flukes. all fish have been in this qt for at least 21 days . goldflake was in for 35 days..

I am thinking... one or two or combo. side effect and organ failure due to hypo or copper or both.?

I am noticing also the personifer is hanging out in the airstone bubble stream.. but I do not see any signs of ick..

I am considering a larger water change again. and doing prazi or General cure

Is there a specific reason you are doing both copper and hypo? Both treatments are a little hard on fish so I would imagine the 2 in combination would be very difficult on them.

Checking your pH is a good idea. The best way to adjust it is with baked baking soda. Makes for a much gentler buffer than most off the shelf varieties.

ph good.. no amonia..
in past 24 hours i have done water changes.. and i am running carbon. i can confirm on a good note that purple tangs can handle this combination... if we want to add that to the charts...

reason i did both .. i had some issues doing hypo at 1.090 so thought 1.010 or 1.012 with copper would be good ... but then again ick can survive at that level so thought copper.. at end of the day.. should probably do one or the other...

as a point of clarification... to be clear.. the goldflake is dying... the personifer is hanging in the bubbles... and the strange thing is personifer has been in QT for a few weeks in hypo and copper. and yet is in the bubble stream as if something is irritating his gills.

Why are you using carbon if you're dosing copper?

removing the copper.. trying to get water quality backup .. they were in the copper for 21 days.. i dont think ick is the issue. fish were in hypo for few weeks before the copper.. longs story ..but have had a few tank wipe outs on large system. so QT like crazy...

Question... cant remeber.. but i think copper has no effect on flukes?

Correct but hypo for 5 days gets rid of them. But that's at 1.009

I do hypo all the time. Usually goes pretty smoothly unless the fish has gill flukes.

Aren't you explicitly not supposed to do copper in hypo? Maybe I'm thinking of some other treatment.

You have expensive taste, @chicago. Can you put up a video recording of the personifer and the goldflake? It will be easier to tell if they exhibit any known symptoms related to other possible bacterial/parasite problems.

sure.. i tried cant take a .mov file .. do i just rename it?

i usually drag and drop jep images.. but wont take .mov or .mp4 ??

Copper does not kill flukes. Can you give one of them a freshwater dip to see if flukes might be the issue?

I'll also +1 to thinking copper and hypo are better off as separate treatments-not combined.

Agree. Sounds like the fish may have some gill damage, perhaps from velvet.

agree with the freshwater dip on the personifier. The goldflake is probably too weak to survive it.... though if that's true then he probably is past saving unfortunately.
