Dear Abby:

I picked up a diamondback goby at the LFS two weeks ago; it was so cute that I couldn't resist! I've heard that they're shy, but since it's been in its tank, it comes out every time I approach and stares at me (and yes, before you ask, Abby, it's in QT by itself). It doesn't matter what I'm doing: reading, staring at the ceiling, yelling at my cyano -- if I look up, it's there. I know it's plotting. I gave it "special grade" sand. It has lots of places to hide. I've tried to befriend it by offering meaty treats, but it just devours them, angrily, and then goes back to staring at me. Does it need a toy? Do I need a bodyguard?

-stalked by my goby

If you have really clean sand, you will need to ensure the goby is well fed or they will slowly starve to death. I have to specially push food toward mine with a turkey baster to keep him plump and healthy. He loves to see the turkey baster coming and feeds directly from it.

They are also big jumpers...if you don't have a top screen, he will jump out eventually.

They are are very fun fish to observe in a tank. Mine also likes to pick up small snails and throw them away from his holes.

It's in an Evo. I've been debating on gluing some screen over the small feeding hole, but it's been too busy stalking me to jump. Yet.

I haven't had a problem feeding it. I gave it a blizzard of mysis last night and it's been swimming through the tank, vacuuming it up.

It spent the morning building the Maginot Line in front of its burrow, which it shares with an increasingly greedy Peppermint Shrimp. It perches on the top, glaring at me. I swear I saw a pair of little tiny binoculars...

I picked up a Diamondback last Friday at my lfs, Aquarium Center in New Jersey. He is so ******, I'm so happy he's part of my reef. He already has 3 Apartments built under the Marco base rock. One apartment as 2 entrances under the base.

And those little suckers do actually stare you down.

Cute! I have a ywg and he looks at me when I’m playing video games until I notice then he goes back into his burrow like “he’s onto me”

Give it some rubble to play with. Bits just small enough to carry in it’s mouth. Mine is just like yours, but he’s quite the architect. I’ve seen him carrying off frags before.
