The tank turns 2 years old next month! Crazy ride so far on this tank but overall I'm enjoying watching true progress. Here's way too many bad progress pictures ;Hilarious left is the beginning of September and right is the start of November (2 months).

An overall update - we went back on vacation in mid November to Colorado Springs and... big news.... ended up purchasing a new home! We're super excited and I'm also already stressing out about moving this tank 14 hours away ;Nailbiting Plenty of time to plan right now though since the new house will take about 8+ months to be completed.

The new house will feature a basement which I have always been envious of those reefers whom have one. This will allow me to have a complete filtration room and will have a walkout so it will be easy to bring the tank in!

The tank overall is doing good. However, over vacation my PO4 completely dropped out to 1ppb so basically 0.... This caused some hair algae and cyano to start taking hold. Its funny how high PO4 I had no algae issues but whenever I hit low PO4 it's a disaster.... Very contrary to popular belief...

Anyways after I discovered this issue I went ahead and starting dosing phosphates in the form of reef roids which is one of the dirtiest things you can put in your tank. Over 4 days I put in 1 little measuring kit spoonful... into 230g... and after the 4 days PO4 went up to 9ppb. This may not sound like a lot but it's literally 9 times the amount of PO4 in the tank over 4 days... that's a lot. So I'm continuing with that method but all corals are still going strong.

I'm going to be attempting to set up a frag system here shortly to hopefully be used to store frags I plan to sell to help afford my addiction ;Playful

Thanks Janci! Yea everything was going very smooth until this little issue. I find it funny and interesting how the only ones who get upset about algae in my tank... is not me ;Hilarious In this hobby it seems people have a bad habit of overreacting. Is it ugly? Sure, but it's not the end of the world where I should be sticking my hands in the tank every day or dumping chemicals in. It's just not to that point yet.

This reminds me I have an idea for a new video idea. The title is "Why You Suck at Reef Keeping". The purpose is to highlight common mistakes and misconceptions. I'd love some feedback from you guys on things I should include. A perfect example is the above.... "overreacting to minor issues". Submit me some things you see often that make you just shake your head and instantly judge someone

One that can be added to the video: making too many changes at the same time to improve the tank and making it worse at the end, not knowing what to undo first.

For those of you so bold... here is a full breakdown of my reef tank in 2020. Overall it was my most successful year in this hobby and I'm hoping I can build off that success. Keep it mind we'll be slightly limited this year due to the move in around 8 months. Can't wait to watch this tank continue to mature!

Posted up some broccoli (green pocillopora) for $20, which I figured was reasonable for the size...

Also I posted up my gsp rock, maybe 10x6 if I had to guess the size... put it up for 150 and I get people sh't posting about how they give gsp away for free... cool? This is an entire rock and idc what you give away for free and you shouldn't care what I sell. You do you and I'll do me...

Update on my cyano issue. I continued with my small scoop of reef roids every day but sometimes I'd miss a day or two... either way phosphates are back up to .08-.1 which has allowed the cyano to disappear. Easiest treatment I've ever done for cyano ;Hilarious No chemiclean and overflowing sump, no changing flow, no manual removal or turkey basting! It was slightly ugly for a month or so but I had plenty of things to distract me in the tank ;Drool

I wanted to also share something I was listening to on YouTube last night that is outright ridiculous and misleading for new hobbiest. The individual stated several things so I'll just list them for ease of reference:
1) high PH has no impact on coral growth
2) when referencing proper alkalinity levels it was stated "they" tell us the range should be between 8-12... then goes on to state there are lots of people who run under 8 Alk and don't have any issues... then most incorrectly states that anything under 7 is acidic... no I'm not making this up or taking it out of context.
3) the higher you go with pH, the higher you are going to go with your alk....

Let me address each of these directly:
1) this is completely false. High pH has been demonstrated to show quicker overall growth (in stoney corals) and not just anecdotally but through scientific research. Can you grow corals at low pH? Yes, 100% you can... but objectively you will demonstrate lower growth.
2) where do I even start with this one? Let's start with the ocean... the alk ranges in different parts but is 7-7.5 to my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong). Next... there may have been confusion or ignorance when referencing "anything under 7 is acidic"... while this is 100% true when referencing pH... the individual was very clearly referencing alk and alk alone (again to my knowledge) is not itself acidic.
3) this statement is almost correct but wrong in the context given. It has been observed that alk levels can play a roll in your pH level, not the other way around. Additionally the individual may be confused (no, they're definitely confused) in reference to alk consumption when running higher pH. As I stated before, if you're running an average pH of 7.8 and boost it up to 8.3, you will 100% see an increase in your alkalinity consumption... and if you don't increase your dosing, your alk will do the opposite of what was stated by the individual.

Why bring any of this up? Because I think it's ridiculous to be out there marketing a channel as "beginner friendly" and then you spew things that are not true and not even helpful. I couldn't imagine how confused I would be if I was just beginning again and this was the channel I stumbled on for knowledge. I think it's sad and highlights an overarching theme in this hobby of bad information which causes new hobbiest to give up and quit. Vicious cycle.
