Another Algae Problem Thread

I wouldn't do 100 unless you have water coming from another tank personally.

I would do a 15-20% water change every day or two for a week rather than 1 100% wc. For your size tank, and looking at the pictures, I'd estimate maybe 100-110 gallons total, so maybe a 15-20 gallon wc every day or two till you use up the 130 gallons.

That's just what I'd do.

What do you mean from another tank? I have zero doubt that the water he'd bring would be perfect.

What's the absolute most you'd do? I'd have to store the remainder which would be a task.

The common train of thought is, that in an established aquarium you can do a 100% water change safley.
Personally in a troubled tank I would limit that amount.
I believe it has most to do with the bacterial population in the water, and the rock and sand as well. So if you suspect poor bacterial population in your rock and sand, this I would change a lesser amount.
I would also test The lfs rodi before accepting it unless its bottled natural seawater they will be delivering.

I would also highly consider this advice.
"Nothing good happens fast in this hobby only bad things happen overnight, if you think you go slow, slow down even more"

I know the owner very well. The shops been around for years and he always tests his water extensively. I've been there many times as he's done it. I have zero concerns about this. My system is a couple years old and has plenary of live rock in sump and DT. I'll likely store 50% and change 50%, say a prayer, and see what happens. Much thanks for advice!

Cool. Good luck!
I add some bacteria as a prayer ...

Well I just read this thread and watched that purple tang. Wow it was not happy. LOL I heard they were mean, but I didn't think that bad. LOL. Don't try the 100% water change, its not needed.

Onward to your problem. This is what I think you should do. In this order.

1. Stop the Nannochloropsis.
2. Stop the reefroids 3x week
3. Stop feeding the pellets for 4 weeks.
4. Buy yourself a proper cleanup crew. You need to get at least 10 turbos, about 15 trochus , and about 12 additional snails of what type you like. I would get some Nassarius as well. Don't neglect your clean up crew. They are very important in an aquarium in this state. They will do most of the work for you. They are needed regardless but that size crew will get rid of and maintain it for you while you work out water chemistry.
5. Complete your RO/DI water setup.

She's normally quite tame, but dang she HATES that tool for some reason. I mean she REALLY hates it. She even gets excited when she sees me raching for it. Otherwise not aggressive whatsoever... in order.

I've been thinking about what you said about my problem.
EDIT: you updated as I posted [emoji4] I'll read your post now.

OH ok. Have you added fish after the purple tang?
Give my method 4 weeks. The cleanup crew will actually wipe out the algae in a week or so, but getting it maintained is what you are looking for. Get that cleanup crew ASAP. You will be amazed at how quickly it goes away. I have seen way worse than that.

Oh no don't stop all feeding. Keep the same feeding cycle for the fish just stop the pellets for a while. I don't know what kind you use, so they could be causing phosphate issues. Just use a variety of frozen for a while. They have some outbreak as well but the corals can eat that easier and wont fall to tank floor and sit. Add some frozen brine, etc for a little bit for that beautiful tang. You can also add an algae sheet to the aquarium for feeding. I feed 2 times a day in my aquarium. Algae sheets in the morning and frozen in the evening.

Stop these immediately
1. Stop the Nannochloropsis.
2. Stop the reefroids 3x week

You don't need them right now.

Seems reasonable to me. Anybody want around 25g of live Nannochloropsis? [emoji4]

What about lighting? Obviously algae is photosynthetic, but where's the middle ground without starving the coral of light?

Don't worry about the lighting. I would leave it the same. the clean up crew will take care of it.

I Just order 50 ORA Cerith snails and 6000+ pods from AlgaeBarn.

Awesome! Keep us informed. It will not take long for things to get right.

At the moment I have a 93g corner tank with a 30g sump. I'm running an NYOS 160 skimmer, a Geosreef fluidized reactor with GFO, an MP40, and chaeto and mangroves in the sump which also has Kessil H80 lighting. The DT has one 250w halide and one Kessil a360. I couldn't decide between LED or Halide so went with both. This tank has been running for a couple years. It's gone through cycles as they all do, but I can't get rid of the green algae to save my life. It grows dense and fast. I feed the tank frozen mysis and pellets daily. I grow my own Nannochloropsis. I also feed reefroids 3x week. I have loaded the sump with pods, both amphipods and copepods. My numbers are stable and show nothing special. I use RedSea Pro salt. I change 30/g per week and water is always RO. I control what I can manually with turkey baster and brushes. Also, I can't keep a chalice alive to save my life. They all end up looking like this...
When I add a new rock to the tank, it turns green within two weeks.

Is that a window I see

Here is what I would do...........Nothing. Yes, that and ......Nothing. Maybe go out for a nice dinner. Rocks with a little algae are much healthier than perfectly clean rocks. Now I realize most people will throw those clean rocks at me, but it is what it is.

I took these two pictures off a remote Hawaiian Island.

I took this off the Florida Keys.

This is my tank. That mandarin was 10 years old and spawning regularly. He finds his food there.

Don't fall into the trap where people tell you algae is some sort of disease. It is healthier than a tank with no algae as the sea grows algae on everything.
If it grows too much, build an algae scrubber but you don't want to eliminate algae, you want to cultivate it to grow only where you want it.
Never throw a chemical in there to eliminate something normal, natural and healthy.

Your response/suggestion posits a solution which costs which me no money and no time and therefor, by its very nature, couldn't possible be correct or even helpful. [emoji6]
Regardless, I shall ponder what you've said here.
