Well it happened. I have 4 nems in my tank. 3 Haddoni carpets and an RBTA. I have had them all for at least 6 months and things have been going well. Then last weekend I upgraded from a 40b to a 75g system. I had only a single MP40 (with nem guard) on the 40b and wanted a bit more flow on the 75, so I put a Jebao OW-10 on there until I can get a second MP40. Everything seemed fine when I went to bed last night, but when I got up this morning one of the carpets was in the Jebao. I tried briefly to coax it out of the powerhead, but had to leave for work. The tank is still good and is not cloudy or anything.

My question is, can this guy remove himself from the powerhead while I am work? I will be gone for about 12 hours and unplugged the powerhead so no more damage will be done, but had no time to remove him from the pump.

I do not know if he can do that but here is some advice. My sister covered her power head with a thin layer of cloth so her anemone would not get sucked in. It has worked so far.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm not concerned with covering the powerhead. I will not even be using it anymore. I will just add another MP40 with a nem guard and there will be NO more issues. I just need to get him off the powerhead. :)

It will depend on how badly caught it is. I would leave it and let the anemone work itself out.

The DIY cross stitch/mesh guards only work if your pump is using an on or off wave pulse. If it’s continuous they get sucked in anyways. Those tentacles can go into the small holes and eat stick. Maybe not with the MP40 printed ones.

well my experience that is. A magnifica got chewed up really bad and needed help with cutting. But gigantea and LTA always got out themselves.

I had the pump on a pulsing mode and it is the smallest of the Jebao pumps, so I am hopeful that when I get home tonight it will be free. If not, I will have to intervene and try to gently remove it. It didn't seem to be wrapped around the propeller or anything and I couldn't see any cuts to the foot or disc, but I couldn't see the whole thing either.

I had to backwind a power head prop once to get a mag out. Ended up using scissors to remove the worst damage before isolation. I use these. Beta breeders five quid each and they do long ones to cover gyre pumps. DSC_0055.JPG DSC_0060.JPG
I cut them down for more space in the tank. Wish they did them in clear plastic.
Good for isolation, treatment. Ended up using them permanently in my tanks. Other guards are too close to the suction of the pump. Nems get sucked in easily.

The nem survived too. Astounded at how it recovered. Inflated at each wound like it was blowing a chewing gum bubble. Deflating joining up its wounds. Fascinating.
