Hi there. I’m having some trouble with a bacterial bloom. I’ve done a lot of research on them but there’s just so many variables up in the air..

I have a 65 gal, I just reset a couple of months back. Used 70 lbs of mature rock covered in coralline from a friends tank and never really had a major cycle. New sand. Coralline is already on the glass so it’s settling in nicely has been pretty stable.

Fast forward two months, and I’m getting a bad bacterial bloom in both my big tank and my nano. It’s by the kitchen, so I don’t know if that’s causing it (I’ve had a few bacterial blooms in the past too, I seem to get them frequently). No air fresheners or anything.

I think this one might have been from overdosing reef roids on Saturday… The problem is my fish are hyperventilating. My skimmer is running and I even added an air stone over night and they are still breathing so fast. In the past, aeration helped them to calm down since blooms suck out oxygen, but not this time..?

I checked ammonia and it’s at 0 so I don’t think its that burning their gills.

Ammonia 0
Nitrate 0-2 Red Sea
Phosphate 0-0.03 salifert
Alk 7.3 salifert

I did a 15-20% water change last night. Should I do another one? I don’t have a uv. What else can I do to fix this bloom and avoid blooms in the future?

Could be the roids, could be new sand getting established. You can stop dosing and wait it out, or a cheap UV light in the sump for a day or two will knock it out.

I think it’s the roids, I usually do a half dose but this time I did a full dose. The water has this same sweet smell of bacterial blooms I’ve had in the past. I just don’t know why the fish still

The sand is pretty well established now, lots of fauna on it already.

I might get a green machine uv since I can get it locally

Go for it. If you don’t mind waiting, even one of the submersible 10 watt ones on Amazon etc would work. Don’t need much wattage to kill bacteria/ algae blooms
