From what I have read some brands of Bio-Pellets seem to help consume more phosphate than others. From those out there using BRS pellets, how many of you find that you still need to remove phosphates using another method?

Asking as I am planning a new tank and will be including a biopellet reactor for the first time. Wondering if I should also be adding a second reactor to run GFO and carbon (in which case I will want a larger reactor) or just carbon (in which case a smaller reactor will be just fine).

I will also have a fuge -so that will export a little bit, but figured I would see how other's tanks are fairing on the BRS pellets in this regard.

Thanks!

I wouldn’t rely it on Biopellets to remove Phosphates, but they do remove some like you stated. I still think between the Biopellets and Refugium, you_shouldn’t_ need gfo.

I'm running pellets and an ATS. My nitrates are hardly detectable with a Salifert test, but there is still some phosphate in my system.

BRS or another brand? And if I can inquire, what skimmer are you running? I think I will be just fine with my skimmer choice as I have seen a couple people with biopellets run it on a larger tank, but just want to make sure I'm not crazy before I set this tank up :).

What type of rock are you going to use? Live or Dry?

I'll start with dry and seed them with a single clean piece of LR, the addition of a friends live sand (two cups from two different tanks), and an added culture of bacteria.

I run Biospheres, they seem to tumble better than the other pellets I've used and they dont clog up things. As for my Skimmer, I have a BK Supermarin 250. I have the pump turned down to about 70% in order to keep a consist head of foam.

Running BRS pellets with an aglae scrubber and not seeing any need for GFO after almost 2 years. I had nothing but trouble from GFO and that's what caused me to switch to the pellets in the first place. If I ever have a phosphate issue again I will just use lanthanum chloride to clear it up.
