I've seen various recommendations on bio pellet starting levels but I eventually started at 1/2 based on some things Melev and others have said. You might want to watch his latest video he posted here a few days ago (and maybe some other viewpoints). One thing I had not realized is the BP reactor needs to be dosed regularly with a bacterial product (well maybe depending on who who listen too). I've known its best to seed at start, to speed up the process, but some like Melev dose. He uses Probidio vials once a week and there are various other products. Of course his tank is more like mine which is heavily stocked and heavily fed. Dr. Tim's product is good also but he says to use it for startup but I'm sure it would be good for followup. I had AquaForest Pro Bio S and added some to the pellets when I presoaked them (I'm using Vertex pellets now) for a day. As far as time for it to be effective that varies in what people will say. Two months is generally what you will find but that likely depends on your tank and how you seeded the reactor.
As far as a reactor I tormented myself deciding which to buy. Pretty much any reactor will "do" but I wanted the best option that fit my setup and was direct recirculating. In the end I got a Reef Octopus BR1000SS and I was just able to squeeze it into my sump. Even if not pearls don't think any pellet is going to clog in this reactor.
