Another Clear Water Thread: How to keep water crystal clear?

I don't use anything for water clarity, but I've used carbon in the past for yellowing water. I occasionally get white, hazy water from a bacterial bloom and it subsides after a few days.

i always wonder when i see articles about crystal clear water. We are keeping creatures ,( replicating nature ), that take particulates out of the water for food ect,It is not natural for them to be in crystal clear water, as sea water isnt, wherever you are on the planet, so we could be ruining our livestock, from fish down to the smallest bug , for the sake of vanity and the " Oh look at my tank " syndrome

This is true....keep em' guessin' :)

Diatomaceous Earth for those not in the know
I actually use a big Hayward d.e. Filter on my 560 full time. It was the part of the filtration that finally satisfied me and my desire for clear water.

I very small amount of ozone for a couple hours at night. It’s like magic

Is it easy to use? How often do you have to change the powder?

It's easy to use. Took some creative plumbing. I have a drain line plumbed in and about every 2 - 3 weeks I flush the old powder out which goes to a drain. Takes about 4 lbs of powder to recharge it but I just use dicalite brand and get 25lbs for under $60 from a pool supply store. It's the cost of clear water for me. I had it offline for a while and wasn't happy...even with ozone and filter socks and pool sand filter running lol. I love it. I was kinda worried I might see a nitrate spike but with my sulfur denitrator they are under 1 and it works perfect for dosing lanthanum chloride to because I can just dose it to my sump and all the flocks are caught by the de powder.
