Another Diatom/Dino ID Threas

They disappear completely at night. My parameters are as follows:

pH 7.85-7.95
dKH 9
NO3 0.4 (down from 1.0 last week and 1.1 the week before)
PO4 0.06 (0.04, 0.03 in the preceding weeks)
Ca 410
Mg 1170 (added 570 mL of BRS liquid mag after that reading)

I was told by my reefer mentor that dinos can cause a die off of snails, which I have noticed over the last month or so (not all of them by a long shot, but more than I would otherwise expect). He’s leaning toward dinos despite that they don’t quite look like traditional dinos.

I’m trying to find somebody near me who has a microscope so I can get a closer look.

Only way to tell if it's actually Dino's is a microscope. You can get a cheap kids one and u should be able to tell. This kind of looks like large cell amphedium dinos if they are only on the sand bed. I used to have them. I would recommend identifying and then using the tools that are provided in the other dino threads to get rid of them. LCA dinos aren't very toxic though.

I did find somebody who has a microscope. I forgot my uncle is a microbiologist professor at a local college! I'll be curious what else he will have access to

That does not look like diatoms to me. Post some pictures once you get it under the microscope.

LOL.....I don't blame you. Just for fun (no way to really say for certain pending the scope views) I'll say Prorocentrum dinos. LCA and SCA don't usually mat like that. Ostreopsis is usually on the rock and only occasionally on the sand. Coolia would be my second most likely (hope not).

Another test you can do is to suck up some of the gunk and shake it in a cut if the mucus comes back together then it's 99.99% dinos

If they leave the rockwork and sand at night and reappear when lights on, that’s trait of Dino’s.
Your nitrates and phosphate may be zero.
Not hard to rid when parameters stable and nutrients available
