Has anyone been successful in just letting the fish get over ick just feeding them garlic with their food will ick real just go away?

The problem with this theory is it never really goes away. While some fish can beat the parasite and live healthy the parasite will continue to live in your tank waiting to attach to a new host. The only way to get rid of it is to treat all fish in the tank for ich an leave the DT fallow for 5-6 weeks. I know not a lot of fun but that is the only guarantee. Otherwise consider your tank a ticking ick bomb.

What you mean ick bomb like all the fish will died? And I got a UV on it won't that kill all the ick?

I know ich is in my tank. My clown got a couple spots of it, but I just fed it more because it was stressing due to the lack of food. Since then, I haven't had a single break out of it. I have an auto feeder that feeds 3 times a day. I get snails, urchins, and crabs to control the algae that grows. I consider it free food for them. I did have a small break out of brooklynella, but catching it early and consecutive freshwater baths made that go away. Sure, the ich can attack any fish, but only if they are weakened and stressed. Keep some simple easy to keep fish and you won't have a problem with this. Try and keep an Achilles tang or Powder blue or brown tang or any of those fish that are easily stressed and you will be fighting ich constantly. And the problem with everyone trying to kill it completely is that the second you buy a frag from another person's tank, there is a good chance ich could be transmitted to your tank on that frag or rock or whatever. So stop trying to eradicate it and start improving the living conditions of your fish.

Everyone has their opinions on this and believe in different methods. I truly believe in eradicating it personally because I do not want the risk in the future. Your U.V. filter will not get rid of the ick, as I mentioned above it will always be in the tank once it's there. Yes, all your fish could die from it. That is a worst case scenario but the truth. As erk mentioned above keeping your fish well fed and good water quality helps keep the immune system of the fish up helping to deter future infections. Regardless, unless you get rid of the parasite there will always be the possibility of infection.

I was going to start my own post but I think I got the answer here. I have a new tank setup and I'd like to start getting some fish into it as it's cycled, but it looks like I should hold off another month as I QT my fish in my 20gal. This correct? My LFS insists I need to get fish into my main asap.

I would say no you don't need fish right away in fact I didn't put fish in my tank for at least two months

Awesome! I'm at 6 weeks now using this site's welcome/starting a reef guide. So if I QT another 4 weeks in the 20 I *should* have a nice healthy starting place as far as disease is concerned for my DT right?

I would definitely say so. I wish I had a quarantine tank for my fish just don't have the money for it

Of course they would, sounds like they are more worried about selling you stuff then your actual exp. in the hobby. That is just plain bad advice. Good thing you posted on this site. I qt 5-6 weeks minimum everything before adding it to my tank.

Corentine tanks are always a good idea. And yes the fish stores it is just that a store where they have to make money hopefully you can find a fish store that has your best interest. I know I go to at least five fish stores always research the heck out of everything before putting it into your tank. Right now I have a yellow watchmen and a pistol shrimp I had a buddy at a fish store that gave me a flame hawk Little did I know they don't get along now I hardly ever see my goby :-/

Thank you! I was kind of caught off-guard there because it's basically the opposite of everything I've read here. I even told her (the owner) that and she said it's just something you need to get used to. Not if I have anything to say about it!

That is a shame. She knows better. Good QT methods can and will prevent it from entering your tank.
