Hi all! I've been lurking and learning for awhile now and finally decided to post. I'm not really new to the hobby, but I'm sure I could use a refresher course. Seven years ago I kept a 55 and a 29, both reef tanks but a lot has changed, I see- for instance, metal halides aren't the "in" thing anymore, now it's LEDs? Ok, so I wanted to get back into the hobby, I forgot just how addicting it is. I told my husband "just a little tank..." So, yeah... I have a tiny 15g reef with 17# live rock, DSB, Current USA LED , lots of flow, good parameters, one maroon clown, one coral banded shrimp, one orange brittle star, an efficient CUC, a few Zoas, an orange Montipora, a small GSP and a hammer coral. Oh yeah, and a CADLight Artisan II 70g with 30g sump arriving within the next week or two, lol.

I'm looking for suggestions and advice on lighting and substrate for this new tank. •70-gallon Artisan II aquarium (35.5” x 23.5” x 18”). I plan to keep a mixed reef. I'm leaning toward a DSB and have been looking at some kessils, and I know I'd need two or three, but man, those things are expensive. Here is the tiny tank ;) any input for the new tank would be appreciated. Thanks!

You mentioned kessil. I personally love mine. I have a 110 (48x18x30) that I run 2x160we and 2xati T5 (one coral+ one blue+) Love the color combo and has been great for growth and coral health. I would have gone with the 360s had I known I would have gotten a tank this large to allow for more expansion, but as for now my LPS, softies, and few sps I have are all doing well. Healthy and growing.

Welcome, nice tank! I never had a dsb but from all the things I read, there's generally more negatives than positives compared to the other options these days, unless you're strictly doing it for the look.

Pockets of poisonous gas, nitrate spikes if you disturb it etc...

Usually most people run 1-2" of substrate. If we're looking at nitrate export, a 30g sump gives you a lot more options. Chaeto, algae scrubber, gfo, biopellets.

Chaeto and scrubbers are my personal choice due to ease of use, cost, and supplying your tank with Copepods.

Welcome aboard! Dsb is out now. A lot of peeps go bare bottom or thin sand beds. Easier to clean. With leds, i like radions. Great colors and par. Keep us posted on your new build. Nice looking nano btw.

I just added a Kiesel 360 love compact and great lighting. I also am restarting in the hobby and had MH lights previously

How big is your tank? How many kessils are you using and what are you keeping?

Personally, I love my dsb fuge. Keeps my water clean as a whistle. And my 40b has more fish and coral than most 75g tanks. Dsb still work as well as ever. They just get a bad rap from all those who do not research it properly. If not done right they can have negatives. Such as gas. But put together and maintained properly, natural is always best. Imo.

Welcome aboard. You'll find that using a DSB is a very controversial subject. Personally, I'm an advocate of it use and had my last one for 17 years. But, like anything you're going to deploy in your system its important to set it up and maintain it properly. To that end here are some articles that are worth your consideration:

Thank you. I haven't had any problems with it yet but I think there is potential for trouble no matter what if the tank isn't maintained properly. I'll definitely be reading before I make my choice. Thank you so much for the links. Very helpful.

My tank is 2 feet x 2 feet x 2 feet it is a custom made tank due to it's placement in my business. There are 2 steel beams on either side so I couldn't go any bigger, but it is positioned so guests in both rooms can view it, so the one kiesel I have seems sufficient right now just finished adding all the livestock today, if need be will add more lighting but the frags that have been in there 2 weeks are already growing

Can you post a pic?
