recently had a bday that netted me a 40gal breeder, a 20 gal long, and a pair of the new shadow overflows.
I'm wanting to divide either the 40b into 3 sections or the 20 gal into 2 sections...going to stick our 2 pairs of clowns in there til we settle on them a new home. moving tanks around in house...lol not like moving a couch here or there...boyfriend hates where his 40 breeder is...and i hate the stand...hehehe
So now my thing is how the heck do i plumb these?? will be using a 20gal long for a sump that's already finished and easy part...and don't want to revert back to hob filter for filtration...
thanks in advance...

Here's my suggestion for the divider in the 40B.....I did this for a 75 gallon freshwater tank to separate the little devils I had....freshwater puffers....from the rest of my fish. Although they were small little fish, they were tail-nippers.

I first made a frame out of cpvc pipe....four elbows and two tees....that snugly fit into the tank. I also "flatted" the elbows and tees to do the final fitting so that it friction fit into the tank.

The frame was covered with "stiff plastic canvas"....which is like thick plastic screen. You can buy this at Walmart. It was attached using hot glue. Oh, and a couple holes were drilled into the pipe to allow air to escape.

To hide the pipe, I attached a piece of lattice using sticky-tack to the outside of the tank.

The screen material allows water flow between the two halves of the tank. I'd put one overflow on one side of the divider and the return line from the sump coming in on the other side of the divider. Hope this inspires your thoughts on what to do.

I was thinking something like yours...only i have glass from a 40breeder boyfriend broke...so was gonna glue glass panels
in then put the walmart mesh at the top about 2inches tall or 3inches tall...
just didnt know how to run the plumbing to ea divided tank and to the sump from ea tank...
i guess return line would be 3/4 in hole in each tank section....how do i get water to sump without using a overflow for each section?

and i am going with the 40b divided into 3 sections to hold clowns...so
so how do i plumb it to make it work??
and going with ready made sump...
