But even if MH grow faster and color better its not enough to hardly notice and definately not enough to justify the way higher costs with MH bulbs/electrical bill costs.

Clearly there's plenty of proof on leds ability to grow and color sps at this point its just denial.

Hmmm...*looks at tank* I have great growth under LED's. Most of which occurred after I switched to LED's from halides. I also have UV LED's.
 
im not sure my 3 little UV leds i have in my led fixture do any thing for coral but make them look nicer IMO
 
i run uv led's in my setup ;)
but im not going to argue leds are better....they are just less expensive and a lot of fun to build and play around with.
 
My guess is that a little UV is healthy for most life on Earth, at least those forms that evolved exposed to sunlight. Even humans need UV. Our moods and health are dependent upon UV. Too much UV is bad, too little is not good. My corals seemed happiest when supplemented with natural sunlight.

What everyone fails to mention, in the numerous threads on this topic, is that not all LEDs/LED systems are created equal ...

However, with that said, MH/T5 Combination over my Reefs ... At least until there is more consistency and/or the LED systems reach more of a technological plateau.

At this point in time many of the "over hyped", new systems of today, i.e. AI SOls, Orpheks, Vertex Illuminas, Radions, etc. will become relatively obsolete within their usable lifetime, in my opinion. The 50-60k hour investment is a major selling point/debate topic for LED proponents, however, I personally believe this to be a very weak argument/positive attribute for the aforementioned reason(s).

If you are as passionate about this hobby/way of life as myself, you cant help but feel privileged to be living in a period of progressive, cutting-edge breakthroughs in the Reefkeeping World ! Not just in the lighting sector, either ... Think, the entire Acropora sp. Genus was virtually untouchable in captivity merely 15-20 years ago. Some of us ReefKeepers are among an elite class, in which we have been able to breakthrough into the realms of keeping/growing/breeding/propagating exotic reef species in captivity ! ***

Exciting to envision the avant-garde LED systems of the near future ...



***As an important side note, it is imperative that WE ALL consider the consequences of our collecting actions. Far too many people collect difficult species in haste, not fully researching/understanding/devoting the attention/knowledge/dedication/time/passion needed to ensure these organisms thrive in our system(s)

ok you guys do know the uv led dosnt put out radiation! just the violet color (lol) got to get uv led (not)

uv rays are dangerous, you do not need them to grow corals. they actually dammage the plant/animal receiving them
not saying they are bad just to be careful.
I do believe they make corals and plants stronger because the plant/animal has to repair as it grows (kind of like if you break a bone it is stronger where it has healed than it was before)

so slower growth but stronger healthier corals

Wrong. There are UV LEDs that are in the 380-395nm range, which is true UV, then there are others who MISLabel their LEDs as UV when in fact they are violet, 410-420nm. You have to look at the spectrum, not what the seller is labeling them as.

Edit: And to quote the article I posted on the last page:

The researchers found that increased UVR had a negative impact on both growth rate and photosynthetic pigment concentration in P. furcata.
Torres-Pérez group concluded that "while several physical factors may influence reef coral physiology, the results suggest that slight increases in UVR can debilitate the skeletal constitution and severely reduce the fecundity of corals living in shallow waters."

uv from 380-395nm? I wouldnt call that true uv


uv light goes from 100nm-400nm

light in the range of 100nm-200nm is vacuum uv , 200nm-280nm is uv-C , 280nm-315nm is uv-B , 315nm- 400nm is uv-A

uv-B is what plants/animals need but can also kill them. it degenerates cells and is the reason you get a sunburn, but it also makes plants animals stronger by having to repair itself

add a reptile bulb in with your t-5 setup and see how your corals grow compared to the "norm" reef color bulbs

Man i've been trying to kill all my corals with led's for 3.5yrs now and all they do is continue to grow larger and larger and color up better and better......stupid corals!!

nobody said they will be killed or not grow .......... with MH they grow better :)

I have nothing against led
I have 2, 120w fixtures myself, but with a 250w mh fixture in the center of my tank the corals that get light from both fixtures are allot nicer than the ones that are strictly under either fixture
