I just got a 60 cube (24x24x24) and now need to order lighting. I had decided on the Hydra 26 but after reading I understand that it only has a 24” spread and is more appropriate for 18” coverage. The Hydra 52 has more spread and accommodates a 24” spread perfectly. My brain says I should get the 52 but everyone I talk to says the 26 is plenty sufficient.

Please clear this up for me.

Have you considered 2 26's. You would have better spread with two fixtures than with one 52.

What are you going to keep? For a softie reef with some LPS and other easier-to-light stuff, a single Hydra 26 might be OK. I would need 3x XR30 Radions or 3 Hydra 52s to replace a single halide for my acropora but they are pretty demanding for light and lack-of-shadowing.

...so the answer in on the sliding scale of "it depends."

Seriously, what is your goal for the tank? This will drive the answer.
