This is just a rant as I don't think my situation can be helped and hopefully someone can learn from my mistake.

5 weeks ago I bought a hippo, a pipefish and 5 chromis from a wild collector. I had a running qt setup. The hippo died the second week but the chromis looked good, actively eating and not hiding. I decided at week 3 that they had had enough qt and moved them to the display. I'm convinced that my qt was wrong, maybe I should have only qt'd one fish at a time. I should have waited. The point is that I AM STUPID. Don't be stupid with your qt.

It started about two weeks ago. So far I've lost a pipe fish, blue tang, sailfin tang, engineer Goby, 3 chromis. I'm getting ready for work now and with the lights off its apparant the tank is cloudy.
I can't find and dead fish but I have a feeling it's not going to be a nice tank to look at when I get home this evening.

I did try a copper based treatment in qt and that only proved fatal in 12 hours. Velvet is a nasty bug and it seems that you don't get much warning. I saw my sailfin looking fine in the morning on Monday then dead by 4:00 that afternoon. This is the worst feeling.

I'm at a loss, thinking this is it for me.

Here is the related thread in the fish disease forum: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/velvet.255293/

I deal with velvet quite a bit and this protocol is successful most of the time: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/velvet-amyloodinium-ocellatum.217570/#post-2499437

In short: Perform a 5 min FW dip, followed up with an acriflavine (or formalin) bath, and then put the fish in a QT and treat with CP (or copper) for at least 2 weeks.

The FW dip/chemical bath provides temporary relief, while CP/copper ensures the fish doesn't get reinfected. In my next experiment, I will be trying hydrogen peroxide to see if it can be a suitable alternative to acriflavine/formalin. I am hoping so because that would be much easier to source on short notice for our members.

Did you ever get a chance to test hydrogen peroxide? While researching my brook problem today I ran across this link which points to some research done on the subject.

Definitely a more available medication and beat the heck out of formalin. I can't see myself dipping my fish (and hands) into a known carcinogen. Even with proper precautions formaldehyde is dangerous in the home.

I haven't. I've been so sidetracked with other projects. Next fish I get in with velvet or brook gets a peroxide bath in lieu of formalin or acriflavine. I promise. :)

If can help you this is the way I use to treat oodinium, crypto ..
A 60 lt QT with nano skim
6Kg of fresch live rocks
A solution of copper sulphate pentahydrate and methylthionium
Before i prepare it bymyself actually i use oodinol jbl
An excellent test for copper
32 Days of QT
No fish loose from many years
