Hi I have some lyrtail orange anthias. I feed my fish some mysis to brine to flakes and so. Everytime I feed the anthias always swallows the food and spits it right back out. So is there a special food they eat or something? Thank you very much in advance

Usually lyretails will eat anything you throw at them. But if yours is particularly finicky you can try any type of fish or shrimp eggs. I use R.O.E by reef nutrition and nutrimar ova. Both of those should get a finicky fish eating.

I saw some of these orange lyre tails at my lfs today. So pretty! Do you love them?

I just got a few recently myself. How many did you get? How big are they? Did you get a male also? Or are you going to watch one change, like I am.

Mine definitely like the food to be moving fast, so make sure your pumps are on. I think it's the thrill of the hunt.

mine like freeze dried mysis (not frozen), brine shrimp, zooplex, finely chopped silversides, krill or scallops

Mine eat anything...mysis, rods, flakes, pellets, cyclopeeze. They don't care! But they both do the chewing up and spitting out thing also. Mine only seem to do that with food in chunks that are 2 big for their liking. Perhaps mine are spoiled and don't feel like chewing their food.

I have 2, bought at separate times as females. After about a month, one of them started developing the long male spike on the dorsal. He never changed colors to the reddish shade that I've seen pics of though. But, started growing at a substantially faster rate than the female. Not sure if that is related to the sex or if that fish just likes to eat more.

I would imagine my male is about 5" long and a brilliant orange with purple accents. He occasionally does this thing where he swims sideways around the other fish in my tank, which appears to be a 'hey, look how big I am' move...but, he has never nipped or be aggressive to anybody.

They're usually voracious eaters, but until they can figure out what is food and what is not, they will spit everything out. They will starve and then take anything you throw at them because they are so hungry. Has happened to me with all the anthias I've ever had that were freshly-caught.

Ok cool I mean they are still alive n active so I'm assuming they are eating something. I just don't want them to starve n crap that's all. At the first day my tangs were kinda chafing them around but now they all get along now

What I meant is that they won't be picky once they are really really hungry, I've never had one not eat at all.

Good to hear! My two lyretails both started eating Golden Pearls today, and a third lyretail and a stocky anthias both started eating dry food a few minutes after acclimation to QT. :)

mine eat the pellets like a pig in the QT along with my clowns, but after I transferred them to the DT they do that spit thing while my clowns are still pigs. Same size pellets, and the male has slim down quite a bit while the females now have a depressed belly.

Will anthias starve themselves to death?
