I' setting up a 45gl and I have a good size center overflow. The teeth of the overflow scare me as small fish can easily get sucked in and I'll have a hard time trying to retrieve anything in there.

Soo... I came up with this.

Items

4 zipties to hold the window screen

Place and ziptie over the overflow tooth.

I made the zipties extra snug but not tight, this way I can remove them and clean them when needed. I'l
Pain them with krylon black later today so the white does not irritate my eyes lol.

Thoughts, ideas, suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Good idea! I lose a fish in mine about once per year... always a pain!

Can you post a pic?
Next on the to-do list is an overflow cover.
Here's a couple of pictures. I doubled decked the egg crate so it sits pretty much flush with the top of the overflow. Keeps fish from jumping into the overflow. Really easy to clean. Hope this helps. Cheers!

Very nice! I actually have left over ABS sheets from car audio pod builds. I'll use a piece and try to make a lid. I did that eggcrate cap on a biocube DIY I had and a small clownfish decided to catch a tan on it. Came home to a dried up nemo :(

If that mesh clogs up too quickly, you can use plastic canvas instead. It has slightly larger openings and is stiff enough that you might get away without using the egg crate.

Great idea. Never thought about using plastic canvas. Hmm. . . Thanks :)

Update...

I had to open the mesh squares a little. They were getting clogged daily and causing my ATO to fill more than needed.

Since opening the mesh, I rinse them out about once a week with a reef dedicated toothbrush.
