For broad spectrum- seachem kanaplex or neoplex
Not sure about controversy- kanaplex is effective and absorbed by fish
Tri- sulfa is another

Almost all external bacterial fish infections are gram negative. A broad spectrum, gram negative antibiotic for that would be the best choice. Kanaplex or Neoplex are both possible choices, but there is no way to know (without doing a sensitivity study) exactly which product will work best for you specific issue.
