Any advice for a first time SPS keeper?

Kalkwasser in your ATO is probably the cheapest, and easiest way to maintain stable Alk and Cal. I agree that you probably won't have to worry about that too much, yet. Until your stony corals and/or coralline are growing fast. Those 4 frags in a 125 won't use up much. First thing, I would worry about is my NO3 and PO4 make sure they are not too high.

Kmore-

I'm a newbie running just a few months ahead. Our perspective, in combination with the seasoned experts here on R2R, may present to a similar chord.

My daughter and I ran a 55g tank for 4+ years with many LPS - Duncan's, Frogspawn, Xenia, GSP, etc. We started a new 125g in September and that was the first time we even considered Alk, Ca, & Mag. It was also the first time we began keeping a tighter control on nitrates and phosphates. Water changes were not keeping up with Alk/Ca demand. We tried Kalk in our ATO, but found that our tank had higher demand and required 2 part in addition. In the last few weeks, we weaned the Kalk from the system to focus on 2 part only. We started using Red Sea Foundation A / B and then switched to BRS (Randy's) 2 part in December. We're still dosing manually, but we bought a dosing system 2 weeks ago and have been running tests since to assess the consistency and accuracy. We'll likely set it up next weekend. I compare the dosing systems to an aviation / marine auto pilot. We can steer a boat or a plane manually, but you'll never maintain a course as stable as the machine.

We started our venture with the idea we would take water samples to our LFS for testing. The inconsistency (and hassle) we found did not inspire confidence. We ended up reading the forums about chemistry and testing and opted for a slightly mixed bag of testing equipment. We use Hanna Instruments for Alk, Ca, & Phosphate (ULR) and NYOS for Mag & Nitrates. We still don't have a pH meter... Once we began a regular testing regimen, the patterns were clear.

FWIW- my daughter and I said we'd NEVER test monthly and get into dosing... now we test Alk daily (that'll likely back off to weekly soon) and all parameters weekly. As we've gotten to know our tank, I think we'll be able to assume a monthly or bi-monthly testing schedule soon. We enjoy it and the ability to predict the results based on patterns and observations is very satisfying.

We've learned A LOT from R2R over the last several months. We have a lot yet to learn, but we're in... entranced.

As a result, the health and success of this tank is a whole different world. Our fish, corals, and inverts are thriving (with only the occasional set back). We have large colonies of Duncan & Frogspawn, but, in the SPS / more advanced coral categories, we added Red Setosa, Sunset Monti, Hawkins Enchinata, Cali Tort, Maze Brain, Leptastrea, Cyphastrea, Blastos, Palys, Zoas, etc.

We now have reefer's disease. Hi, my name is Matt and I'm a reefer... Come on in, the water's warm. About 78 to be exact.
Wow! Any question I have I hope you respond! It’s like I was listening to someone from macna!!

Well said!!

Ok so I’ll definitely keep an eye on NO3 and PO4 and look into kalkwasser in the ato! I think I’m most nervous for the point of having to start calculating how much to dose but looks like I have a good amount of buffer time to learn as much as I can before trying it out. I can’t thank you all enough for the info!

Wow thank you so much for this! We are definitely coming from the same boat! I mainly stick to LPS but I just couldn’t resist trying out some acros. Now I have a ten gallon full of LPS and a 125 that is just begging to be filled with SPS.

Yea check out @Bulk Reef Supply on YouTube they have a very informative video on implementing kalk into your ato..
Love their videos it’s how I’ve learned everything I know (which isn’t much but still). Thanks for the advice and yeah prices of some dosing pumps are crazy!

We assumed Kalk would serve the SPS frags in our system. Surprisingly, the coralline algae (we assume) carries a heavy consumption rate. In retrospect, the Kalk may have answered the demand, but we made a secondary mistake by initially targeting 10dKH. We read the forums and saw consistent recommendation of 7-11... so, 10 it WAS. We started seeing white tips and fading on our SPS frags and learned (from R2R) that 10dKH was too high for the lower nutrients. 8-8.3 is the target now. Kalk may have done that, but we'd already jumped to 2 part. My point is not to underestimate / minimize the Ca uptake of the coralline Kmore mentioned.

Your going to hear and see a lot. I've learned over the years tanks are very personal. Best success comes from experience/failure. And really the only failure is giving up.

Take in a bunch of info. Use what makes sense to you.

For instance I hear a lot of people talking about dosing this (nitrates) and dosing that(phosphates). I was thinking how much I like food and how big I get when I keep eating. I believe a lot of people starve there sps tanks. And wonder why the skin is pealing off. I feed my SPS everyday. When I don't, they die.

My advice is study the best sps tanks and figure out what works for you.

best advice i can offer is expect to lose some SPS b/c of your limited knowledge, the learning curve is quick, but assuming a water change will replenish the alk/ca your corals are using only works for so long. Figure out a dosing schedule either manual or automated, make sure your lighting is up to what you have purchased, and welcome to the dark side.

I think you have excellant advice here .Am not gonna reiterate what people have already said regarding equipments , dipping , chemistry especially alk and all .

With my experience, there's 2 cents I would add to the list :-

1. Keep your dang hands out of water as much as you can - it helps !!!!

2. Buy quality frags from reputed sellers - doesn't mean that they have to be costly ones . It would save you a lot of headache of dealing with pests which will drive a newbie nuts when it comes to especially acroporas .

If someone tells you keeping acros are difficult , try getting rid of pests !!! It makes growing acroporas a cake walk than to get rid of AWFW ..

3. SPS - Stability Promotes Success- not my quote but one of the gurus of acro keeping - Greg Carroll

4. Learn the art of being patient - I have seen so many people give up in keeping sps especially acros because you want the tank to look amazing in 6 months .. it takes years to build a matured tank and there's no shortcut to it .

Rest is what others said ....

Abhishek

If there’s one thing I learned from all of this is maybe I should have focused more in chemistry class :p

So I went ahead and did a test today. I had previously said my tank was stable and what I meant by that was that each time I test it’s the same thing, although I do see maybe some dosing is in order for calcium. This is what I’ve been getting every week:
NO3 0
PO4 .22
KH 9
CA 360
Mag 1320

Auto top off water changes and check your parameters once a week

I think the necessity for dosing has been over stated (just read the first page). A couple tester sticks in a 125 gallon won’t need any supplementation. It will take a surprising amount of sps mass to require you to start supplementing I’ve got several large colonies of trash sps (monti, birdsnest, stylo, pocci) and a couple dozen acropora ranging from moderate size colony (several dozen branches at lengths of 6-7”) down to small frags, and I can’t even Dose full strength kalkwasser in my ato. Your regular water changes alone will be enough even if they’re seldom. Those little frags won’t impact your calcium and alk
