Any advice you would give on cycling?

Even one piece of live rock is very worthwhile. It can act as a seed for all sorts of beneficial bacteria and microfauna. This is what I do with my tanks since I prefer dry too due to cost and ability to make cooler aquascape. I take a rock or two from my main display, a couple scoops of sand, and a couple pieces of cheato and it substantially speeds up the cycle and adds a lot of biodiversity and microfauna like copepods.

Judging by the piece being small for this system Im guessing I should still add some bottled bacteria?
 
What is a fake chemical cycle? How would an algae scrubber or refugium make any difference to cycling live rock? This is a fresh tank so the scrubber will have no algae and a refugium wouldn’t have any nutrients to grow even if you bought chaeto.
The an efficient scrubber take care of ammonia from rock die off until bacteria reach a balance.

the first pic was in February . Added this test subject and 50 lbs of uncured live rock along with some damsels the same day. The second pic is a week ago. No ammonia spike. A week later I moved 5 or 6 hammers in. It works for me. I shouldn't have said fake but after reading the stories of dry rock and ammonia/bottled bacteria cycles I think this artificial cycle is more inhumane to animals that a natural cycle. BTW. I've dome this so many times over the last 40 years without any extended or failed cycles.

Also you stock your scrubber with algae and immediately introduce the bioload. Best way for new tank.
 
About the start my first cycle and I really would like it to go well. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on some common mistakes that I should avoid, any things that will greatly help me be successful etc. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

patience is key. If you're using tap water stop now, and use RODI. Don't do fish in cycles. Getting a bit of liverock/sand (not liferock, or live sand that comes in a bag in a store) can help.

-wait 3 days then test (should I test ph alkalinity etc at this point too?)
-Continue daily testing
-once ammonia hits 0 do large water change( total tank volume is 91 gallons how large of a water change would you recommend?)
Anything I’m missing or got wrong?
Yes I will definitely be very patient with the whole thing and not add any fish for a month or montb and a half. At what point do I know the cycle is fully finished?

Soooo... Just about anything that introduces ammonia will work. Planning a timeline however is dicey at best, but if you add ammonia, 30 days is a good target. Daily testing is not needed and may even cause you to make poor decisions. For me, if forced to use the old school cycling model... at gunpoint... I would:
1. Establish substrate and stable salinity and temperature;
2. While not absolutely required, add some bacteria, bottled, live rock, live sand, gravel from another trusted tank;
3. BUY A GOOD AMMONIA & NITRITE TEST KIT
4. CAREFULLY add an ammonia source (I like ammonium chloride purchased from the internet for a couple bucks) until the test readings are about 2 ppm;
5. WAIT & test weekly until ammonia level reads 0;
6. WAIT & Test Nitrite weekly until it starts to fall (doesn't have to be 0 to proceed but I would wait until it was trending down);
7. Do a 30% water change; and
8. Start adding fish

All I know is that I believe in taking it slow. What's the rush. I used cultured live rock. Did the fishless cycle WITH LIGHTS OFF which I did not see mentioned. Supply ammonia 5ppm max, and bacteria starter. I know it works, and also minimizes the ugly stage. However today found bristle worms, almost got stung after 1 and a half years of not seeing them. Took me 45 days to complete. Added fish still with lights off . Turned them on and watched the ugly stage proceed. On my third type of algae now. Word of caution. Use coarse sand. I cannot siphon mine because it is lighter than the algae big pain. Am slowly removing with a net, and am going to replace. Just me. Also read about fish disease . I HAVE READ SO MANY INCIDENTS i AM AFRAID TO ADD MORE. Because of my $ 400 Tang
 
Regarding an algae scrubber or fuge, most macro algae can use ammonia and ammonium directly and do reduce it. So can most coral. These things also need some form of phosphate, phosphorous, organic or inorganic which is often in limited supply in new tanks. The level at which they can contribute is probably highly variable and not well understood. Just to be safe, I would not rely on them very much to help.
 
There has been major spread in the opinion that if you use live rock that you skip the cycling process or create a tiny mini cycle. It might be true and maybe I'm missing some major leap forward that we took... however.. I don't know where this coming from in the hobby. As someone who has been in the hobby for 30+ years I can assure you that there were several decades in which the vast -vast- majority of tanks were set up with live rock. Stunning amazing live rock. I owned a few of them and belonged to groups and circle that kept reefs. I do not know of a single one of them that skipped the cycling process and know of only a few that had tiny blips of cycles. Of those MOST of them were from using rock from another fish tank rather than a LR bin. I have actually seen (personally) very little difference in cycles between those that start with LR and those that seed their rock wisely and well. I'm not just referring to bacteria but really seeding their rock.

Absolutely agree. Unless the live rock is "cured" in a different vessel prior to being placed in the new aquarium. This allows the ammonia rise associated with the die off of things that just won't survive in a tank to occur. Using base rock rather than premium rock limits the ammonia spike a little bit.
 
Can I dose for thing like PH while cycling?
Don't worry about pH. As long as you are within the range of 7.8 to 8.5 your pH is fine for anything that will be in your tank for the next 6 months. It's not really until you get very heavily invested into corals that pH matters and the difference is minor.

ability to measure actual cycle status is what ushered in the change, we have digital meters that track out to .00x ppm nh3 instantly nowadays, back then they had color gradients to guess from and a very very slow lag time in response by the test kit.

in other words, those were all skip cycle tanks you mentioned. they didn't have blips, the testers showed .25 which nowadays everyone knows what that means when API says it (don't fear, nothing is wrong, most running reefs show that reading in any API poll)

there is no need to manage pH in a cycle it will complete within ten days of dosing bottle bac and providing feed to the system. if you'll skip the ammonia dosing step, and sub in two pinches of flake feed ground up into powder, add this with your bottle bac and in ten days time the system will be cycled.

fish food is the direct substrate match to the initial strains of bacteria in the bottle. they alternate over time into longterm filter bacteria generations...at the start they're common sludge eating bacteria out of a bottle that also happen to oxidize ammonia when under load. you are saving yourself 91 gallons of new make water by specifically not dosing ammonia and instead trading off for ten days of fish food level ammonia, same cycle ability at the end + no huge water change. your current plan is selecting a method that requires a huge costly water change at the end.

by using updated cycling science, submersion date timing from the ammonia line of a cycling chart, we see by day ten ammonia is under control, on all setups. ammonia line drop dates don't vary on cycling charts, its a well known drop date. no huge ammonia dose needed.
