I have a MRC MR-1 beckett style skimmer with a Mag 12 that I am about to hook up on my new 135 gallon build. I was just wanting to hear other's experiences and pointers for cleaning and maintenance.

When I used to use Becket skimmers many years ago. You don't have to clean the becket very often and they are very low maintenance skimmers....
When it stops producing skimmate ... a good cleaning of it will return it to normal.
You have to do your regular protein skimmer maintenance as you do with any skimmer as well.

Just curios. Did you buy the skimmer new? and why did you go with a Becket skimmer? The only reason I ask is because that Mag 12 gives off allot of
heat and consumes allot of power. That is why I went away from a becket skimmer. They are good skimmers though.

I got it used with a sump for a heck of a deal. I've always heard how the becketts skim real well and I knew about the heat and power consumption. I've read that the becketts are superior in performance to venturi style skimmers. with the pump only being 6 months old and going on this 135, I didn't think the extra heat would be a concern. I'll be using a Varios 6 DC return pump and temp controlled through Apex so I hope I'm ok.

Oh ok. Its always a good thing to get a good deal. If you are not running MH's that one Mag will not be noticed. I would guess about a .5 to about .75 degree temp increase. I used to run 2 mag 12's..one on each return and a mag18 on my beckett skimmer on a 175 bow and it raised temp about 3 degrees. So all in all if you only have one thing producing a little heat you are good.

That DC pump you have will not make much heat. I have had them both and I'm in favor of the needle wheel skimmers. Very efficient. On the beckett's the more water you put into them the better they skim.

Good deal then.

Happy Reefing. You will not be disappointed.

I'm still fairly new to reefing and am enjoying trying out different products like this skimmer and the new gyre pumps. Maybe one day I'll have compiled a list of my favorites in all equipment categories and will have the "dream tank".

Well you started with some really good equipment. That is the key.

Skimmer and lighting is the top 2 IMO when getting started. Very cool. I have never sen the gyre in action. You are ahead of the game. Keep us posted on how they work.

I will. I'm using a ATI 6 bulb dimmable with a reefbrite XHO strip for lighting. Good equipment makes the hobby more enjoyable and less head achy. I'll link my build thread over here when I start it.
