I'm a firm believer in cycling with bacteria in a bottle (Fritz turbo start is my personal favorite). I had dinos in the past, and as a last resort before quitting the tank I used Dr. Tim's method of dosing bacteria with success. That's basically the only time other than cycling I've used a bacteria additive, but I was wondering if anyone could speak to the value of adding other bacterias. If so, should it be just once, or periodically? I started a new reef recently and I was just wondering if I could benefit from adding anything now that I'm through the cycle. Thanks!

There is a lot of debate about all the different strains of bacteria and how helpful / harmful they are to our reef system. Bio diversity in my opinion is a good thing. Not sure you can get that with a bottle of bacteria.
Generally over time a few strains of bacteria will dominate. It might help to dose. I dont do it. I figure I get enough with adding corals and livestock. Now if you have an issue, something bacterial might help.

Personally the way i see it once your tank has cycled naturally or with the aid of a bottle of bacteria, certain bacteria strains more suited to survival in your system will proliferate and adding a big dose of the pre bottled strains may potentially just destabilize a natural balance that has now been reached.

Unless something has disrupted the bacteria in your tank, i really can't see any benefit for your tank in doing so...or your wallet

For biodiversity , I feel you’re better off getting rubble and sand from other successful reefers tanks. There are companies that will similar stuff directly from the ocean.
