Any conversions out there?

i converted my tank to a sump/refugium in my stand. My water flow goes through both "strainers" in the left most one I have my overflow in my right most one I have a in tank basket with matrix and purigen. I'm thinking about removing those and let it flow ( water) and putting the purigen in my sump.
Has anyone else converted their tank? And what have you done with your basket areas?
