I was wondering if there are any types of coral that like shade/no direct light? I am not a big fan of SPS.. I love coral that "moves" in the water, but also love zoas etc. Can anyone give me some examples of coral that would still grow and be in good health in shade?

Thanks in advance.

Favites? Sun corals are neat but need lots of feeding for health.

Most of your NPS corals would do good in the shade, you just have to feed them often;)

Bump for a good topic!

+1 ... Have 2 sun corals!

A black one which grows like crazy and I have trained to come out when I feed other inhabitants :)

A pink one that I have had for over a month and is stubborn as ....
I still have to remove to feed!:confused:

How much shade are we talking about here? There are acceptable levels, but I don't really know of any photosynthetic coral that will thrive in the shade. (especially in the long run) Like mentioned above a NPS coral would probably be your best bet, although feeding it on a regular basis will be a top priority.

Shade is relative. If you turn your led all the way up there's more light in the shade than with them at half. you can still see them in both cases but you can see them so you know there's light.
A par ,eter or submersible lux meter is best o course, but estimating is fine. my tank is med highlight, the shrooms hate the sandbed, but love my shade close to it. but they also won't grow in the deep shadows.

My scolymia likes the "shade" in my tank. But the "shade" in my tank is probably 150 PAR (where the scoly resides)

thanks for all the ideas and feedback... I think I might give the sun coral a try and see how it goes.
