I'm getting ready to set up a 300 gallon tank. I love the look of some of the non-reef safe fish (puffers, triggers, angels) and was wondering if there are corals out there that could survive in a tank with these fish. I haven't had much luck keeping Coral in the past, but like the color and motion of them. Would GSP, mushrooms, frogspawn, leathers, or zoas be able to survive a well fed tank with some non reef safe fish?

It's doubtful. Given enough time one of them will eat something you want them not to eat.

If only someone could find a good -looking fish that would only want to eat GSP and xenia coral, and then flake food,...:D

Your coral will be fine with Triggers.....your CUC will not though. There are also a few species of Angels that are considered reef safe so you might want to focus on those?

If you had trouble keeping corals before, this may be even harder for you. Triggers and large angels eat a lot and poop a lot. You may end up with water quality issues that the fish may tolerate but that the corals may not .

I think sometimes the term "reef safe" doesn't directly mean corals as much as it does your cleanup crew and clams if you plan on having any.

IF YOU HAD TO TAKE A REEFING EXAM, WOULD YOU PASS?
