I am doing research to set up my first salt tank, and noticed that the live rock is pretty expensive for the cool looking stuff. I was just wondering if anyone had some wisdome to share in regards to making homemade live rock?

If you are talking about live rock with tons of sponges, algaes, and other life there is really nothing you can make to imitate real live rock. But you can make your own dry rock and seed it with some live rock from someone's tank.

I did my DIY LR I made it from portland cement and mix gravels, small stone, mashed marble, and I seed them with only 15 lbs of real live rock and I had aroun 200 lbs dead rock now after less than 6 month all rock get coraline algae and some creature one it if you need any help pictures just inform me.

The best route I have gone with my tanks was to go 2/3 dry rock ($2.89/lb here for Marco rock) and the other 1/3 from an established tank. My dry rock was completely covered in purple within 3 months. Better looking than any rock at the LFS
