I have made a simple protein skimmer for a 14g with a pop bottle and an up flow algae scrubber. Here are the links:

My current UAS is just a bit better made than this one and the ps is not in use as neither is my 14g. I also made a pump driven ps, but have not pictured it yet.

You could do a 5 gal water change a week and not need to filter.

With a 5 gallon, you can get away with very little if you do good regular water changes.
