I set up a tank, (well I didn't set it up but I paid for it), for my 12 yr. old granddaughter. She would like to get a good reference book on corals and fish. Something that will explain the care level and maintenance of different livestock. All the books I have are at least 10-15 years old and I am looking for a reliable source.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, nobody is writing books about this anymore. The 10-12yo books like Julian Sprung’s Books are still relevant in terms of the science. May be a bit much for a 12yo. Your best bet are online sources.

#reefsquad - any suggestions about an easy to follow online resource?

Thank you all. Great suggestions. My Granddaughter is not allowed to join forums but I will direct her to the article links. Thanks again.

Book Of Coral Propagation Reef Gardening For Aquarists by Anthony Calfo. Excellent book IMO.

Two great resources are available for free: (1) the R2R article entitled: "The Supreme Guide to Setting Up a Saltwater Reef Aquarium" (I realize that you mentioned that she isn't allowed on Forums but this is worth printing or copying into a document for her to read), and (2) the YouTube video series entitled "BRS 52 Weeks of Reefing".

As far as books a few others to consider are:
  • Marine Chemistry: A Complete Guide to Water Chemistry in Aquariums (Brightwell, 2007)
  • Breeder's Guide to Marine Aquarium Fishes (Wittenrich, 2007)
  • Clownfishes: A Guide to Their Captive Care, Breeding, and Natural History (Wilkerson, 1998)
  • Conditioning, Spawning, and Rearing of Fish With Emphasis on Marine Clownfish (Hoff, 1996)

-The New Marine Aquarium by Mike Paletta
Without question the best option for her given her age and experience level. Perfect for entry level/beginners, includes all the basics, how to setup a tank step by step, and includes a few different checklists. Most of the information was relevant ~3 years ago when I read it. Plus, it's superrr cheap used on amazon.

-Aquarium Corals : Selection, Husbandry, and Natural History by Eric Borneman
This is an absolute must have for every coral enthusiast. It's more in depth and advanced, and focuses mainly on different species of coral and their requirements, etc.

-Corals : Quick Reference Guide
If she's interested in corals, this reference guide may be more her speed (instead of the one by Borneman). Just the basics, easy to understand.

-101 Best Nano Reef Species Handbook
Quick and to the point. Great for deciding on livestock.
