I (legally) collected this purple ribbon gorgonian in Florida on a work trip and I need help with tank placement. It appears as though some examples/species have an X or Y shaped cross section, but mine is flat. My research found that they require high flow, and I’ve got the perfect spot, but how should the blades be oriented with respect to the current? Should it be into the current like an airfoil, or should the current hit it broadside. I currently have it in the airfoil orientation and the upstream polyps seem to be blown against the blade during the stronger “gusts” my wave maker produces.

I have had quite a few of these and fragged them over the years. If it’s happy with the polyps out then don’t stress. It’s going to be fine in either orientation, however I prefer them the opposite you have it so the flow pushes them more. But not a big deal.

We’re yours flat, or did they have the X or Y cross section? Any idea if new growth will produce different cross sections, or are those different species?

mine have always been flat. I suspect those might be different species however I am not sure 100%
