Any hope for this coral?

This favites has been encrusting well for the past several months. I just noticed the dead area forming on the side. What are the chances it will overcome the dead tissue and make a full recovery?

its not very severe , it should recover in no time with no issues .
try to know the reason and eliminate it

Did anything change in your aquarium recently - flow, lighting, parameters, etc.?

No, nothing has really changed. Lights and flow have all been stable along with the parameters. Magnesium is a bit high (around 1480) but I am slowly bringing it down.

My maze goniastrea did this which I think is similar, don’t know why but it made a full recovery. Took a couple months though.

So here is the coral now. It was half alive a day ago and overnight it died. Is this something I should worry about spreading in the tank? No idea what happened

Looks kinda close to the torch coral in that pic. And the most severe damage is on the side nearest the torch. You sure the torch wasn't sending out sweepers at night to attack it?

I don’t think whatever it was will spread. Sometimes things just don’t make it

It is actually a frogspawn and not a torch. Had not thought about sweeper tentacles. Does a frogspawn sting nearby neighbors like a torch would?

Yes. If I had to venture a guess as to what happened, especially with no other corals dying, it’s most likely the frogspawn.

Frogspawn have long sweepers that come out at night and can reach out to 5 inches. They are very aggressive. I keep mine isolated from my other coral near the back corner of my tank

Good to know. Thanks for all the advice. I did have the frogspawn by itself in an area where it was not doing well. When I moved it to where it is now, it began to thrive. The favites was already there and encrusting the rock so I left it where it was. Lesson learned.
