Any ideas??

Hello all, so I have been in Florida for a week and my father has been feeding and watching the tank. I got home really early this morning and I noticed something has been eating my clams mantel and left a little divot out of it. It looks as if the mantel has a chunk out of it and a little spot on the body as well. I tested numbers and everything seems "normal". I only use the red sea test kits so it's not the most precise but my numbers haven't change since I left so I have at this point ruled that out.

My first thought is the mantel might have been nipped by the 1 left emerald crab in the tank. So I got him out and will see if that makes any progress.

If by a chance it's not the crab, has anybody had anything eat your clams like this?

In the tank it's a 32 cube

1 blue devil damsel
1 watchman goby
1 green goby
1 manderin
Corals

Bristle worms
Bristle star
Sphagetti worms
Asterina stars

The one looks like a limpet to me. That wouldn't touch the clam. Maybe @DSC reef isn't getting the tag so I will also tag @OrionN to see what he thinks about your clam.

I sent Orion a PM just incase but didn't want to bug him too much.

Here's another pic of mantel where it shows the eaten part.

I also checked the bottom and it looked fine no snails.

The one looks like a limpet to me. That wouldn't touch the clam. Maybe @DSC reef isn't getting the tag so I will also tag @OrionN to see what he thinks about your clam.

You're welcome. It really doesn't look that bad from the pictures. You can try to see if it heals and post again if it starts declining. Let us know if you catch anything in the act.

I raised a maxima from 1/2" upto 3.5 " only to find a shell one morning and a big ol fireworm i never saw munching down the insides

The clam is not too healthy, with poor extension of the mantle (1st picture), this may be just when the picture taken, but the shell can be seen with not much new growth. The mantle looks injured, in both pictures, can be a bite or infection or trauma. The two Mollusks pictures is not the cause of the problem for the clam. One, the smaller one, is a limpet and the other is a stomatella snail. Both are good herbivore for the tank.
You Derasa is growing a little, so if you provide good light an chemistry, I am sure he will recover well. Trying to see if there is any fish nipple at him. That semicircle cut top L of the second picture look like a fish bite. Sometime, if your father added undissolved two part additive, the solid can landed on the mantle and cause injury similar to the spot in the middle of the mantle. I did this in 1997 when I first keep a reef and clams.

I take back on the "two Mollusks" The larger on looks like two arm of an asteria starfish, which is harmless also.

Recorded my emerald crab having a buffet on the clam on other softies.

He was removed. No activity so far.
