What is your general opinion of it? We do one with our small local club and honestly it hasn't worked out like I thought. Most of what gets picked up is often put up for sale later or they sell entire systems with co-op corals included. I gave away several corals at first, some cheap-Os and some more expensive sps and such but most of it disappears. It sounds like a great idea but in the end it's just a bunch of people picking up free corals.

If you're doing one with your local club tell us the good and bad that goes along with it and if it's successful or not.

Are you talking about like a club growout?

For example,

Say I have a large colony of ORA red planet. I offer a frag up for donation to the coop. A member then hosts the frag until its big enough to cut another frag and donate it back to the coop. The donated corals are not supposed to be bought or sold and there is no money involved at all. It's supposed to be a good way of sharing and spreading aquacultured corals.

Here in our local dfwmas we have a coop. You get a points for coral you donate and when you check out it subtracts a point. More rare corals are worth more points.

I'm a member of dfwmas. ;) I'm not really close enough to the area to participate in your coop though. I do follow it a bit to try to model ours after yours. We dont have the point system but it may be something to look into. Do you consider yours a successful program?

We at MTRC have done informal programs as a topic for a meeting. Everyone brings a frag or two and swaps them around. No real expectation, but most don;t sell them until they grow them out, and our club is really good about giving frags as well as making them very cheap versus buying retail.

I think point system really works well as you won't have someone gathering up all the corals. Plus it gives incentive to add to the coop.
