I've heard of a local reefer using a motorized light rack that slowly moves his led fixtures over sps tank using 2 instead of 4 fixtures and saving on electricity Anybody doing this I'm planning a 300 gal build and would like to hear thoughts on this

Ive heard of someone even using the new kessil a350w with a light track, sounds pretty interesting. I have seen it done. I think this would be more suited for a frag tank than a display since you dont need a constant light source for viewing pleasure. If you do attempt this let us know, Im interested in knowing the effects on coral, noise level and electricity saved!
Good luck!

Pretty sure I heard jarretshark had his set up this way but unfortunately was hit hard by sandy maybe he can chime in or others who have seen his set up

I have seen an LFS with a large frag system that has light movers with their halides... It would be a cool way to use enough light to cover the majority of the tank, but move them to avoid shadowing or to create a sunrise and sunset type of system.

It sounds like a good idea but I think you are better off getting some sort of dimmable lights and a controller that will simulate the sun movement.

The track would be cool WITH Radions, lol. not to be moved all the time, just when u need to do stuff.

If I remember correctly I'm pretty sure the guy said his corals where colored all over not just on top because the lights moved and hit all the coral not just top!
I figue on a lg system could save a sm fortune on electric not to mention fixtures

Any one have pics or a video of something like this?

I'll snap a few photos at a LFS by me they have a 650 gallon display with 2 fixtures that move and light the whole tank. I'll try to get some details about it also from them for you.

My 150 build has a light mover i will post a video in a little.
The cheap ones with the chain driven are the way to go as they move
so slow you can not eveb see the lights moving.....pretty nice.
I had a standard mover over my reef some years ago could not stand the
fast back and forth but the chain ones are tremendous.
I have 1 strip of leds along the whole tank and a array on the mover.
You get great coverage with 1/3-1/4 the lights needed.

I had one on my 8' frag tank. It worked well. Slow moving. I put higher light stuff in the middle and lower light stuff on the ends.

Wanna buy it? :)

Sometimes you here people claim that movers and sps dont mix .
years ago jason fox had a single mh on movers over all his
frag tanks.....his growth was unreal.
I have never seen the chain driven ultra slow movers over a reef
but they are way better to me.

Here are a few pics I found of the display. I'll get better ones of the light movers and see if I can get you a brand name.
